IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have many needs for 2016, but owner and general manager Jerry Jones reiterated finding a quarterback is at the top of the list.

Backups Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore have combined to go 1-10 this season after starter Tony Romo suffered a broken left collarbone twice this season. Jones has acknowledged the front office handled the backup spot entering the season poorly.

“We’re going to try to all the ways – all ways – to come up with a way to get Tony a backup, while at the same time looking toward the future,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday. “Some people would say that’s dreaming. Everybody wants that, but we have a high draft pick, obviously. We're earned it, and we've got it. If we evaluate and get an opportunity to get a couple of players there, we got to look at it hard.”

Jones said he had a conversation with Romo about the future of the position on Saturday night in Buffalo. He has said he believes Romo, who turns 36 in April, has a 3-5 year window left at playing at a high level.

The Cowboys have not drafted a quarterback since 2009 (Stephen McGee, fourth round) and have not selected a quarterback in the first round since Troy Aikman in 1989. They took Steve Walsh with a first-round pick in the 1989 compensatory draft as well.

It’s possible the Cowboys could take a quarterback early in the draft as well as look in free agency for a veteran backup.

“It’s obviously going to be a high priority for us, the backup situation, as it relates to not only being able to come in and do better than we did this year, but whatever way, whatever we do, do better, but we’re looking to our future,” Jones said. “That’s as big a thing for me.”

I'm not so certain, the fact that he actually talked to Romo about it again the other day and then Romo came out publicly saying he thought it was the right thing to do if that player were rated highly says maybe they are really open to it.

Here is exactly what will happen....

Jerry will sign Johnny Football in the off season regardless of who else becomes available. Period!

The reason? He loves this guy, wanted him in the first place, and wants more than anything else to see him succeed as a cowboy for no other reason to be able to say "see I told you so" to the coaching staff and his SJ. In his mind that would cement his legacy as one of the best GM's in the history of the NFL.

God forbid if that happens and he does succeed here! Can you imagine the ego JJ would have. He would feel he knows about player personnel decisions better than anyone and would go on a rampage of crazier and crazier signing each season.

Then in the upcoming draft a good QB will be available and JJ will pass on him believing the Johnny Football will save the day.

It is going to be the worst possible outcome if Johnny football has any modicum of success what so ever! JJ will go on a rampage believing he is a football genius and will even start telling everyone that he built the triplets and that Jimmy Johnson was just along for the ride and succeeded solely because of JJ's own genius!

If Cleveland takes Lynch or Goff, they are going to donate Manziel to someone. Philadelphia with Chip Kelly might have been competition for us, but now that is not an issue.

We will probably get him for a couple of Day 3 picks. He'll be under contract for 3 years, relatively affordable, and easily cut if he screws up.

I really want Lynch or Goff, badly. If we miss out out on those 2 and we can get him for peanuts, I'd take the chance on Johnny Football. He's only playing if Romo is hurt and I'd rather have him back there trying to make plays than Matt Cassel.

Not sure I'd sign a free agent like Osweiler. He's going to command a pretty good contract and with that its almost a must then that he plays, and we know he isn't going to play ahead of Romo if he is healthy.

If Tuesday's Armed Forces Bowl was in fact the final college game of Cal quarterback Jared Goff, then he went out in style.

Goff was masterful in leading the Golden Bears to a 55-37 win over Air Force, completing 25 of 37 passes for 467 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He's just the fifth player in FBS history to throw at least six touchdown passes in a bowl game, per ESPN.

It was a record-setting day for the junior signal-caller. He became just the fifth player in FBS history to throw at least six touchdown passes in a bowl game, per ESPN, and he broke Aaron Rodgers' school record for passing yards in a bowl game.

He also managed to set the Pac-12 single-season marks for passing yards (4,719) and passing touchdowns (43) during the game, which were previously held by Connor Halliday and Marcus Mariota, respectively.

In 13 games this season, Goff was 341-of-529 passing (64.4 percent) for 4,719 yards, 43 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Though Goff hasn't made an official announcement regarding his future, he is projected to be an early first-round pick in the upcoming 2016 NFL Draft, potentially as high as No. 1 overall. He will have until the Jan. 15 deadline to make a final decision.

Johnny Knucklehead does absolutely zilch for this team and he definitely isn't the kind of backup who gives you any confidence whatsoever if Romo goes down.

This team has fucked around with the QB position enough. Go sign a decent middle of the road vet to backup Romo and draft somebody early in April.

I'm just hoping it's not asking too much for Jones to remember the fiasco that was our QB search post-Aikman, and select a QB with the highest pick we've had in 25 years.

FWIW Broaddus has said several times this still haunts Jones to this day and that he firmly expects it to have an impact on our draft decision in April.
