Since only a limited number of teams win divisions and make the playoffs, teams that make the playoffs are "contenders". Its not like NBA or NHL where 90% of the league gets in.

Not always. Especially when in some divisions, 8 wins, even 7 could get you in. It's how you perform up to and during the playoffs, and nothing I've seen has indicated that we were able to win a Championship. We've been game quitters for years.
