Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says cornerback Mike Jenkins seems to be buying in to the idea of being part of a strong cornerback rotation in his final season under contract to the team. Jenkins watched the club sign free-agent Brandon Carr and spend a first-round pick on rookie Morris Claiborne in the off-season, placing his starting job in jeopardy.
Jenkins, who has reported for camp, will have his surgically-repaired shoulder rechecked later this week by Dr. James Andrews.
Jones drew an analogy to the Cowboys’ potential depth at cornerback in 2012 being reminiscent of the team’s depth in the defensive line during back-to-back Super Bowl winning seasons in 1992 and 1993.
“We won a Super Bowl with a real rotation in the defensive line. Some really fine players,” Jones said. “What if Mike could be a part of a corner group that, because of the skill level, could be an outstanding corner group? He’s a free agent. He could be part of quite a story and, in doing so, greatly enhance his stature as far as the NFL is concerned. We know that he’s capable physically of doing that.”
Jones said such a move could lead to a new deal in Dallas.
“The future could very easily be right here with the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones said. “We will write a check for a good football player.”
Is Jenkins buying that logic?
“Yes,” Jones said.
