It's Aug. 8, or '8-8 Day' for the Cowboys

OXNARD, Calif. -- It's Aug. 8 -- you know, 8/8 -- and the fine folks at ESPN Stats & Information have dubbed today National Cowboys 8-8 Day.

Nobody seems to do 8-8 like the Dallas Cowboys.

Since 1997, the Cowboys are 152-152.

Since 2000, the Cowboys are 128-128.

Since 2011, Jason Garrett’s first year as the full-time coach, the Cowboys are 40-40.

From 2011 to 2013, the Cowboys finished 8-8 every season, losing de facto NFC East championship games to the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. Since the advent of the 16-game regular-season schedule in 1978, the only other teams with three straight 8-8 seasons are the Green Bay Packers (1983-85) and Houston/Tennessee Oilers (1996-98).

In 2014, the Cowboys broke out of their 8-8 rut with an impressive 12-4 record. They followed that up with a 4-12 record last season.

Tony Romo is entering his 10th full season as the starter. In the previous nine seasons, he won eight games in a season four times. Since 1978, Romo and Hall of Famer John Elway are tied for the most eight-win seasons by a starting quarterback.

How many quarterbacks have the Cowboys started since Week 8 of the 2006 season? You guessed it: eight -- Romo, Brad Johnson, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee, Kyle Orton, Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore.

The ESPN Stats & Information group gets full credit for this one: How many letters are in Tony Romo's name? Eight.

But there is another way to look at 8-8 Day. Dez Bryant’s uniform number is 88, and he's healthy. So that's a good thing, right?

Happy 8-8.
