Of the 12 teams who punted the ball the FEWEST times in the league, only three (NYG, Dallas and Philly) failed to make the playoffs. The 9 who did were (in order, fewest) New England, Atlanta, Seattle, San Fran, Denver, Washington, GB, Minnesota & Indy. The Giants had the fewest punts in the league this year.

On the other hand, the teams that FORCED the most punts (12 of them) fared this way:

Only 4 (Denver, Houston, Baltimore & Cinci) made the playoffs. The 8 who didnt were Arizona, NYJ, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Miami, Detroit & San Diego. Denver led the league in punts forced.

In terms of turnovers, 3 of the 6 in the NFC who forced the most turnovers made the playoffs (Washington, Atlanta & seattle. The 3 who didnt were Chicago, NYG an Arizona. In the AFC 4 of the top 6 in turnovers forced made the playoffs (New England, Cinci, Houston and Baltimore). The two who did not were Cleveland and San Diego.

In terms of give aways, 5 of the top 6 in the NFC who turned it over the LEAST made the playoffs (Washington, San Fran, Green Bay, Atlanta & Seattle). The only one who didnt was NYG.

In the AFC The top 5 all made the playoffs (New England, Baltimore, Hosuton, Denver and Cinci) Cinci was tied with several teams. Indy just missed.

So what does this say? Obviously protecting the football is absolutely huge, as 5 of the 6 playoff teams in each conference gave it away the fewest times.

The main reason I posted this was for those who claimed there was no difference between forcing a "punt" or getting a "turnover". 8 of the 12 teams who forced the MOST punts failed to make the playoffs. There was much more of a correlation to punting it the FEWEST times though, as 9 of the 12 made the postseason, (2 others in the top-12 narrowly missed) On the other hand, 7 of the top 12 in FORCING turnovers made the postseason.

Once again... I don't care about all of that with the stats. That was never my argument to begin with. That still does not change my position.

Fact is, whether it's by INT, fumble recovery, turnover on downs, or 3 and outs/PUNT... the defense STOPPED the offense from scoring on THAT particular possession. And so the ball is TURNED OVER to the offense. That's all. The stats stuff is irrelevant.

Look... how about this. All takeaways are turnovers, but not all turnovers are takeaways.

There's almost always big difference in forcing a punt from say, between your own 30 yd to midfield, as opposed to forcing a turnover in that same area.

The difference is in the field position, which is why normally teams that force lots of turnovers tend to score more points. They get the ball in plus territory more often.

Fuck those irrelevant stats and facts. Punts are the same as turnovers cause Laz says so.

I don't know about all this.

but I do remember some lame ass mofos at the zone explaining away Quincy Carter's interceptions as being the same as a punt.

But it still adds up to the same thing: the defense prevented the offense from scoring on that possession, and forced them to turn it over.

And the field position is always different whether it's a punt, INT, or a fumble recovery. In fact, no two INTs are the same in regards to field position.

Once again... what's the difference in field position from a punt that's booted 60-yards and that of a QB having his pass INT 60-yards downfield? NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL.

Hey Laz... flip it around and look at it from the offensive side of the ball, specifically from Tony Romo.

Why do we flip out when he throws 5 INTs in a game, but not if we punt it 5 times a game?

I don't know about you, but I fucking get pissed when we punt. You can't when a fucking game punting. Duh! And the fact that you are punting, is because the inability to get first downs, to sustain a drive, and finally score a TD.

It's demoralizing.

Hidden in there is the shitty fact that Dallas will likely never be a team that can be depended on to NOT turn the ball over on offense and so we're pretty much fucked regardless of how well the defense does.
