Hitzges: 'Somebody has to start asking serious questions of Rob Ryan'
Staff Reports

Catch SportsDay On Air twice per week on Fox Sports Southwest, when Dallas Morning News experts discuss hot sports topics from the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers and colleges (check our TV listings for air times). Here are a few highlights from Monday's episode featuring Rick Gosselin and KTCK-AM 1310's Norm Hitzges:

On when the Cowboys are going to put it all together:
Hitzges: “The Cowboys committed16 penalties in that game. That’s ridiculous. Somebody has to start asking serious questions of Rob Ryan. We spend all these draft choices and all this money on defense. We are playing this no pressure attack. Our defensive backs through five games haven’t intercepted one pass. The offense is getting the notice because of mismanagement, but somebody has to start asking some questions.”

On the Cowboys special teams:
Gosselin: “Remember who the safety was on the Cowboys kickoff team in the 90s? Darren Woodson. I would love to have Darren Woodson back there when Jacoby Jones is running 108 yards. They have to make a better investment in special teams with their better players. It’s an edge to be had, and the Cowboys refuse to take it.

On the Cowboys defensive struggles:
Gosselin: “Where is the pass rush? This is the biggest problem I had drafting Morris Claiborne. By trading up for Claiborne, they gave up a first rounder, they gave up a second. They didn’t draft a pass rusher until the third, Tyrone Crawford. Anybody seen Tyrone Crawford? If DeMarcus Ware doesn’t get there, the Cowboys don’t get there.”

Nov 20th of last year, the last time a Cowboy DB intercepted a pass...only two ints since then, both by Sean Lee

Really mind boggling

This defense is ranked #2 in the league right now. Its the last thing I'm worried about as far as this team's problems go.

It's a little misleading though. We are like 29th in Turnover ratio which is always a key indicator of a good defense. I don't think there is a stat for it but we are like 0-for-15 in critical defensive stops this year. Too many times when all we need is a single stop to win the game this defense routinely lets team march down the field. On the Ravens score before the half we had them like 3rd and 15 from the 20 with less than 2 minutes left. They went right down and scored from that point.

The defense is solid but has no (collective) heart. Sean Lee can't carry the whole unit emotionally.

Its a major problem...we havent exactly played a slew of offensive juggernauts...some of the QB's we've played were the most mistake prone, most sacked in the league...and we've basically forced no mistakes and have few sacks/pressures

The OL is still the biggest concern, but the defense's lack of production is alarming

You know your D sucks when all the opposition has to do is decide its time to score and they do it no problem every time.

Just get us in the tournament baby, well totally fluster Aaron Rodgers, Eli, Matt Ryan, then peyton manning

The defense did a great job against Eli and the Giants. Had a good half against Seattle but sucked in the second half. Played great against the Bucs. Good half/bad half against the Bears. Against the Ravens, played great but then played poorly down the stretch. I see a defense that is inconsistent. Flashes of greatness vs flashes of poor execution. As a whole i think Ryan has done a good job considering what he has had to work with the past two seasons. I think if you compare his defense to the other units on the team (offense/special teams) you have to believe it has been the strongest one.
