I'll say it right now...

If we hired Jon Gruden, we'd be in the Super Bowl (barring catastrophic injuries) this coming year.

We might suck in 5 years, but he'd get us there right away.

I'd take that trade off.

Thats a big if with these bunch of pussies

The year before he left for Tampa, they were KO'd because of the tuck rule in New England. I think they (like New England) would have beaten Pittsburgh rather easily the following week, and advanced to the Super Bowl

And in 2000, they finished 12-4 and got the AFC title game, only to lose to the Ravens who defense was suffocating everybody that year.

A divisional game? That doesn't count. Jeff Fisher "narrowly missed a championship" when he lost to Vermeil in the SB.

In 3 years Ware and Witten will be past their prime and in about 5 Romo will be too. It's not like we need someone to come in and rebuild our roster. All we need is a few pieces and the right coaching staff in place.

ok...well he was definitely in the running then

And the Raiders did go to the super bowl the following year, and lost to Chucky's Tampa team. Bill Callahan was the HC of the Raiders that year, he was OC/OL coach etc etc for Gruden in Oakland. Oh, and he just happens to be on our current staff.

We need an asskicker more than a "rah rah" clown like Gruden. Ever listen to him on ESPN? Every player is the "bestest player he's ever seen!" He's more likely to pat Tony on the back instead of kick him in the butt.

Yeah but he looks pissed on the sideline. And as you know coaches that look pissed or yell, spit and scream are way better than anything else.

I bet he's exactly the same in the broadcast booth as he was on the field?

Other factor to keep in mind. Jerry loves Holmgren. Probably is one of the people "outside the organization" he's been chatting with. Gruden is a Holmgren disciple. Gruden is about 88 years younger than Holmgren.

Other guess, Holmgren may end up with some role in our front office.

Exactly. Don't confuse him playing nice nice auditioning for jobs in the booth with how he coaches on the field. He lit up some of those rookie QBs and he'd do the same with Romo.

Guy would be great for the entire team and the Al Davis experience can only help. I'm excited. I hope it happens.

*Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is publicly supporting coach Jason Garrett, but some front office men won’t be surprised if Garrett still is fired after the Cowboys’ disappointing season. Whether or not Garrett is let go may depend on if Jones can lure a coach he thinks would be better. Don’t be surprised if Jones is surreptitiously making inquiries about Jon Gruden and Mike Holmgren.

This has my hopes up.

If it doesn't happen, I will ......... still watch the Cowboys next year. But I'll be really sad doing it. Really sad.

So has any legit media member commented on this yet? I hope it's not just some bleacher report rumor.

Gruden is an asskicker. One of the knocks on him is he wears guys out in a few years because he rides them so much.

As SP and UVA said, don't make the mistake of thinking he coaches the same way he calls a game. Wouldn't exactly help ESPN's ratings if he called guys out all the time.

But hey mid... Don't get your hopes up. This rumor has been out for a few days now. It's just getting message board traction today because of that blog post dbair put up. But that blog is getting it from the same Dan Patrick/Peter King rumors that popped up days or even weeks ago.

This will not happen. Jerry is not going to fire the boy genius he has been propping up for years. This is a PR stunt to keep the fans(us) off the real issues

You're contradicting your own statement here. The "real issue" is the coaching, which is why this is gaining steam and fans are getting excited about an excellent solution.
