Are the Cowboys rebuilding? Is this a paradigm shift? Is Jerry Jones ready to change his ways for the success of the team? Plenty of questions abound and a few people think they have the answers, not the least of which is former Cowboys super scout and NFL trailblazer Gil Brandt. His advice to Jerry and company is worth the read...and worth consideration at the highest levels of this storied and once-great franchise.

Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys should consider adjusting focus
The Dallas Cowboys are in an interesting position. For three consecutive seasons, they've finished 8-8 and just behind the winner of the NFC East, putting them on the perennial edge between success and failure. If the team wants to move away from that edge and ensure that it wins consistently, I think some changes might be in order.

"Hire a director of football operations." That is Brandt's first suggestion. It is also the consensus of almost all media types covering the team and observers inside and outside the NFL. It is doubtful the septuagenarian Jones is going to heed that instruction. He has stubbornly held tight the reins and driven this ox cart into one ditch after another for 17 years. Don't look for him to yield control now.

Jerry has one requirement that must be met if his team ever wins another Lombardi trophy. HE must get the credit. HE must be recognized as the architect and the driving force behind the team's success. He will be damned if he is going to relinquish control of anything now. What if he did and it succeeded? Everyone was right and he was wrong and he still doesn't get the credit he thinks he deserves. The ghost of Jimmy Johnson tortures this man far worse than any of the Christmas ghosts ever tortured Ebenezer Scrooge.
About that quarterback of the future thing...

The Cowboys have not taken the quarterback position seriously since finding diamond-in-the-rough Tony Romo, one of the great undrafted free agent finds of all time. Romo is, however, 34 years old. He has undergone two back surgeries. He will not last forever.

Since Romo has taken the helm, the Cowboys have spent one draft pick on a quarterback. They took Stephen McGee in the fourth round in 2009. He is no longer with the team. Don't look for them to put a high priority on the position this draft, either.

Cowboys won't host Manziel, Bridgewater
The Cowboys, according to multiple sources, have no plans to bring in two of the top quarterbacks in the NFL draft -- Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater -- to Valley Ranch. NFL teams can host up to 30 college prospects at their facilities prior to the draft.

For Jason Garrett, it is still all about the process...

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has yet to enjoy the pinnacle of success. He has been mired in mediocrity for three-plus years. But don't expect him to his the panic button or become discombobulated. He is a rock, the picture of stability, as Calvin Watkins reminds us in this short but insightful piece...

Jason Garrett sticks with the process
Jason Garrett is a man who deals with the process. His process is work hard today, tomorrow and next week. Garrett's stance on building a football program hasn't changed. It never will. Garrett is a man who understands history. When he first became coach of the Dallas Cowboys he brought back the Blue and White scrimmage in training camp.

Will the process work? Will Garrett find success despite the stubbornly intrusive owner/GM? Will 2014 be a breakthrough season, another season of so-so football, or an unmitigated disaster?

Stay tuned...

Jerry: "Who do I trust for draft advice? Hmmm.. Switzer, Brandt, and Lacewell."
cobrakai: " Mr. Jones, Gill Brandt said you need to hire a real GM."
Jerry: "Less talking and more sucking punk."

Dude changes OCs DCs, and play callers every season, HCs every 3-5 years... but refuses to change the decision making process.

He's proud of it. He's gone through 7 head coaches and only 1 GM ~eye wink~

A football program?

This isn't the NCAA.

Garrett would be a far more successful at the college level, so I'll give him that.

Hasn't Gil Brandt been thrown out as an example how Dallas is no different than the Cowboys under Schramm? :lol
