Garrett believes Cowboys' new scheme can get Drake Nevis playing like he did at LSU

The Cowboys are using the change-of-scenery theory with Drake Nevis.

Or maybe, change-of-defensive-line.

“Oftentimes, these defensive linemen get into systems that really suit them or maybe don’t suit them quite as much,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We feel like playing in this scheme, we can get him back to playing the way he played in college: coming off the ball, playing with good leverage and being a destructive force, both in the run game and pass game.”

Nevis was a third-round pick by Indianapolis in 2011. He played in 14 games with the Colts, three starts, and had 39 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup. The Colts released him at the end of camp this year, and the Chargers claimed him. He was inactive for two games with the Chargers and released.

At LSU, he had 139 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

“He’s one of those guys that demonstrated a lot of ability to come off the ball, and explosiveness, when he was in college,” Garrett said. “Again, a guy that we liked coming out, we did a lot of work on, and you follow these guys’ careers.”

I guess neither the Chargers nor the Colts defensive schemems require their DL to be explosive and disruptive off the ball?

Seems legit.

4-3 DT is pretty different from 3-4 DE Midster

See Warren Sapp. Some players are just scheme specific. I agree with Red Jesus here (what have I done?).

I don't know if this guy will be any good or not. But I do believe in Rod Marinelli. That guy is by far our best coach. What a great addition

I'm getting ahead of myself, but I think all of us can assume that Marinelli is the DC-in-waiting, here in Dallas. I think Monte was brought in to get it all started.

It's already been mentioned but Nevis will be a much better player in this scheme. It's ironic that we were interested in him in the draft and he became available now. Ratliff's days might be numbered here.

I think a major strength of the current defensive coaching staff is that they understand the kind of player that best fits their defensive scheme. That's huge. If you really know what kind of players will work in the scheme, you have a chance of finding them.

This was one of Parcell's strengths.

I don't know if the offense has this fit-thing figured out.

God knows Jerry doesn't.

Marinelli is DC next in line unless he is scooped up by another HC offer. ZC is right that one of the biggest hindrances to the offense is finding and optimizing the talent. It seems like only one aspect of the offense can really function well at any given time...until last week. But last week was probably one of the most deliberate and intensive game planning sifting of what does and does not work, since the 2nd Giant game last year.

Are the Colts and Chargers 3-4 teams? I literally have no idea.

The Colts' just recently changed to the 3-4. The Chargers have always been 3-4, at least as far back as Wade Phillips as DC. Ironically, Freeney supposedly left the Colts because he didn't fit their 3-4 scheme, but now he is with the Chargers in the same scheme.

I imagine that Marinelli wanted this guy, and so he is here.

Remember how most Cowboys' fans were fretting over how the DL and not the OL, was now the weakest unit on the team, and there were some that kept saying, "Wait until Marinelli gets them going" --- I'm paraphrasing, most disregarded it as being similar to, "Wait till Woicik blah blha blah."

Well from all looks, the DL appears to be the strongest unit on the team.

Marinelli is a sorcerer.

Based on the production of Selvie and the Golden Cock I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

I think he means that we wanted him in the draft, but I might be mistaken.

I thought he meant it was "ironic" that a player that Dallas wanted in the draft suddenly became available at a position that Ratliff was thought to be occupying - so it's kind of serendipity instead of irony...or it could be conspiracy.
