Tuesday it was announced the Texas University Interscholastic League punished Amarillo High School issuing forfeit of six games due to a clerical error causing a freshman to be ineligible. No "cheating" had been involved, the kid was a transfer from another school district and the paperwork got messed up and neither school caught it. UIL rules say that when a student athlete transfers he/she cannot play varsity for the first year. However there are exceptions which can be applied for and are usually granted. This is the paperwork that got messed up. Kid played in six varsity games, six wins forfeit.

Friday night the annual crosstown rivalry game AHS vs Tascosa was going to be just a ho hum affair with no playoff implications. Now it's huge because:

AHS must win
Lubbock High must defeat Lubbock Coronado (hasn't happened since 1987.)

If both of the above happen? THREE WAY COIN TOSS TO AWARD THE #4 SEED IN THE BIDISTRICT ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS.

Amarillo Caprock (my alma mater)
Amarillo High
Lubbock High

Would be the schools tied. Well, what happened?

And just like before, the legendary 3 way coin toss to decide playoff fate back in 1987 for Odessa Permian? The coaches didn't wait and met to decide it immediately.

AMARILLO HIGH WON THE COIN TOSS!

The Golden Sandstorm advances to bi-district next week, opponent and site TBD. Stay tuned.
