Day After Thoughts

We are the epitome of that movie "Groundhog Day!". We see the same story unfold almost every year. Year after year. We've now lost to every team in our division in win or go home games since 2008. Its a frustrating thing to watch.

I like Jason Garrett. I thought he was one of those classic overachiever guys as a player. Very limited talent, but because he worked his ass off and did all the little things right, he made himself a serviceable NFL player. We won a number of games with him playing in place of Aikman (or in the case of Thanksgiving 1994, in place of Aikman and Peete). Everyone who played with him thought he was a super bright guy who'd eventually be a really good NFL coach. As a coach the team plays hard for him. They never quit. They've had to overcome alot of adversity this year on and off the field.

That said, even I (one of his biggest supporters) admitted weeks ago I thought he was no longer the answer here. Last night was yet further proof of why. We arnt going to win big with him as HC. He tries. I think he probably works hard. He gets the team to play hard for him. But he is lacking in other areas and its time to move on. In spite of what Jay Glazer reported the last two weekends, I dont think Garrett is safe and I do think he'll be fired sometime in the next 7-10 days.

Onto our next big issue. Tony Romo. I said it last night and will say it again, Romo is the prime example of a "coach killer". I dont think most people understand the term. Some think it only refers to off field issues clouding the issue for an otherwise great talent. In Romo's case its that he is so good on occassions that every coach who watches him will think "I can be the difference for that guy" and "I can coach him out of those mind numbing mistakes". You cant. Nobody can. Jimmy Johnson in his prime cant. I dont think he is a championship QB. Its been almost 7 full seasons as a starter now, and he is exactly the same player now as he was when he first took over as a QB. He can be sensational at times. Sometimes for weeks at a time. But in the end he has the absolute worst flaw a QB can have. He folds when the games matter most. I am not talking about 4th quarters of some mid season game. I am talking about BIG games. If the Cowboys sign Romo to a longterm contract extension, the next coach will never see the end of his contract. Take it to the bank. I'd absolutely let him play out the last year of his deal or seriously entertain trade offers for him this offseason and start rebuilding. Another thing I will echo from last night. For all those that say we wouldnt be anywhere without Romo I present two questions: 1) Where do you think we are right now WITH him and 2) If you believe nobody else could do what he does, why did we go 5-3 (and easily could have been 6-2 or 7-1 had it not been for a couple of crazy plays) the 2nd half of 2010 with a social security QB at the helm for most of those games on a team that was epic bad? That dinasaur QB played pretty damn well too and put up some good numbers. Kyle Orton is a capable NFL starter. He can bridge the gap until a drafted guy is ready. He is not a Quincy Carter or end of his career Vinny Testaverde. If Orton had played all 16 games this year, I have little doubt our record would probably be exactly the same as it is right now. 8-8. If they put Romo on the market, there will be quite a bit of interest in him. Starting with teams like the Chiefs and Jets.

The OL obviously needs upgrades. The safety positions both need to be changed out, bad. We need more talent in the defensive front 3 (or 4, if someone wanted to switch back to a 4-3 style defense). They'll need to decide what to do with Miles Austin, who seemingly is never healthy and drops way too many passes now for a guy who makes what he makes. But in the end, if Garrett/Romo/Ryan all return as is, we'll be sitting here after next years season ending game vs Philly, Washington or NYG and having this EXACT SAME DISCUSSION. Groundhog Day will have returned. The definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over and expecting to see a different result. Jerry has to look in the mirror and realize that he cant fix what is wrong with the team by doing what he is doing (and has been doing for 18 years)

I really dont have anything to say about the game itself. Everyone saw the same thing. A very winnable game against a beatable opponent, and we didnt get it done. Bad QB play. Turnovers on our side, none forced by our D. Terrible run defense and a couple more special team gaffes at very inopportune times. Neither the offense or defense made a single adjustment despite seeing the same two things all night long. It was like a high school game in some ways. Even Shanahan took a pot shot at halftime, saying he wasnt all that worried about only throwing for 47 passing yards because of what he was seeing his rush offense do. Same 'ol Same 'ol.

Time for something different. Hopefully it happens asap.

I like the writeup, but there is a chicken-egg problem with calling Romo a coach killer.

If you put Romo in the position to fail (awful OL, personell unable to beat the blitz, almost no support from the running game) and ask him to do too much on a consistent basis ... does that make Romo a "coach killer" or are the GM and coach "Romo killers?"

This GM and coach decided to spend their top two draft choices on a CB immediately after having signed the top fee agent CB on the market ... instead of addressing in a meaningful way absolutely obvious and glaring problems on the OL.

The results were entirely predictable.

It's the same thing every year.

To be honest, I'm not looking forward to next season. I'm tired of wasting 3 hours of my Sundays on this team. It's such a relief that it's now over. I'll post a few more thoughts later.

Here are a few thoughts, questions:

How much longer does everyone want to continue following this train wreck?

I'm not sure I do any longer. Sundays are filled with dread/excitement/anxiety because I know what our games are like. That's not fun at all. This team has the same results year after year after year. I work 5 days a week with 2 days off. I'm tired of having my Sundays ruined because of this team. It would be one thing if we were building something and getting better but we're not. At some point you have to say enough is enough. I think I'm at that point.

Garrett makes mistakes as a playcaller. Last night, he kept trying back to back runs, and then he'd fling it around 3-4 times in a row. He still hasn't mastered how to balance an offense using all the moving parts. But, at least he tried to commit to the run yesterday even if he was ineffective in his play call mix.

Yes, because Jerry thought they were a couple of CBs away from being an elite defense. He was quoted as saying the pass rush was fine, but they lacked cover guys.

And that may have been true (sans all their injuries this year), but in the process they ignored the worst part of the team in the OL, which lost them the division.

Quarterback Tony Romo said he suffered a cracked rib on his left side, an injury sustained when he was hit by Redskins cornerback Josh Wilson late in the second quarter.

Outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware said he will need to undergo surgeries on his right shoulder and elbow, injuries that have affected Ware for weeks and reduced the perennial Pro Bowler to a part-time player in the season finale.

Receiver Dez Bryant suffered severe lower back spasms that forced him to leave the game in the fourth quarter. Bryant, who was not available to the media after the game, had to be helped into the showers and left the stadium in a wheelchair.

Receiver Miles Austin suffered a high ankle sprain in the second quarter. He attempted to play after halftime but left the game during the opening series of the third quarter.

In spite of what Jay Glazer reported the last two weekends, I dont think Garrett is safe and I do think he'll be fired sometime in the next 7-10 days.[/B]

From your mouth/fingertips to God's ear/eyes.

The Eagles' game a few years back? Those were BIG GAMES as you told me.

I don't know. Myabe because after Jerry fired Wade, he threatened the players that their jobs also were in jeapardy? Or maybe that was one of Garrett's best coaching, because he accomplished his mission: sandbagging Wade and getting him fired.

Does anyone else remember the opening night against the Redskins that year, when with just 4 seconds left in the 1st half, and us being down 6-3, and on our own 20 yard line... RHJ got the flash of brilliance to call one final play---as if we were going to march the length of the field (80 yards) for a TD in 4 seconds or even 50 yards to get into FG range, and then line up for said FG in just 4 second..SMH... and it resulted in a fumble by Choice that was returned for a TD? You bag on Fat Rob and rightfully so, but this is the kind of shit Garrett brings to the table.

That's just an even greater indictment against Garrett. I can jsut as easily say that Campo could have gone 8-8 with Romo and what we have. He went 5-11 with the likes of Carter and Hambrick, and the OL was just as bad then.

Look. We struggled to get to 8-8. Romo brought us back in a number of games, that I doubt Orton could or would have. So no, we wouldn't be 8-8 with Orton. Last year, Romo played with fucking busted ribs all year. Romo put his heart and soul into this team.

Have you even bothered to think that we shouldn't even been in this situation in the first place? A better HC would have already had the division locked up, it wouldn't have had to come down to the very last game, and Romo wouldn't have felt he had to put it all on his shoulders. WE STRUGGLED to get to 8-8. What good is an OC if he can only average 7 points per half with Romo, Austin, Witten, Murray, and Bryant? I'm tired of seeing OCs do MORE with LESS.

I hear you, but in the end this sort of thing happens with Romo too much. After basically 7 seasons of seeing the same thing over and over, I've just about given up hope it'll ever be any different for him regardless of who the coach is or what players are around him.

If he's staying long term, I hope I'm wrong.
