Yes this is me, falling for the bullshit of this circus yet once again. Now keep in mind I never really believed we were winning 14 or 15 games and somehow now would have the 77 Doomsday Defense of 85 Bears Defense on the field. But I did think it was more than reasonable to expect the team, and especially the defense would at least be "improved". Improved doesnt means top-5. Improved doesnt even mean top 10-12. Just better than the train-wreck defense of the last couple seasons and on & off at other periods of the last 3 decades.
I didnt expect us to wipe the floor with the Giants either. I expected it to be a fairly tough game and knew they'd probably be improved over recent years. But I also knew they were REALLY bad the last few years and had a lot of new pieces to onboard as well (kinda like us) and that two of their best offensive players were both coming off devastating season ending injuries.
Then the game started, and we shit the bed, again. Just like every fucking year it seems.
1) The defense was a complete and utter failure. Somehow they managed to take a historically bad team defense, change out the coordinator almost all the assistant coaches and a majority of the players and MAKE IT WORSE. It was just dreadful to watch and was every bit as lousy as what we saw last yr and at times under Zimmer too. Run defense was completely bullied on basic run plays. Pass defense had major coverage issues and even the dreaded blown coverages we all believed were a thing of the past, and the pass rush without blitzing didnt exist. It's only one game, but Christian Parker's debut was a true debacle and everyone probably has concerns now over whether he really is the right guy or not.
2) Prescott was by no means great and my concerns with his arm seem valid and were on display with a couple of throws, including the ball he admitted he was trying to throw away out of bounds but got intercepted on the sideline. His arm is not going to magically get better, it is what it is at his age and with his track record for not getting anything done in the postseason for this long they have to get serious about a long term plan for when he is gone. That said, Prescott got no help from multiple drops from the WR/TE group, including two perfectly throw ones to George Pickens. The 2nd one is ultimately what ended the game as had the ball and a chance to take the lead, but instead turned it over and gave up the game turning TD. The pass protection from Steele was virtually non existant as well. They have a real problem at RT now.
3) The defense had a few opportunities to make a difference but couldn't come up with the ball. Four fumbles on the ground and we only recovered one. Caleb Downs probably made the best play of the game with his blitz/sack that blasted the ball out, but somehow landed right in the Giants OL hands. 9/10 that ball goes sideways or backwards and we probably recover easily or maybe even scoop and score. New guy Durant had a real chance for a 1st half pick but couldnt control it.
4) Not many players played good. I thought Ezeiruaku looked fairly good with a team leading 10 tackles, 1/2 sack and a couple other TFLs. Downs had a nice debut but in coverage the Giants basically ignored wherever he was. Fellow rookies Barham and Lawrence did a few good things although both had a couple mistakes too. Lawrence should have drawn a 2nd half penalty for an obvious hold and without it he'd have certainly had his 1st career sack. Refs ignored it though.
5) Javonte Williams became a well deserved favorite for many for his play last yr, but he royally fucked up on the 4th qtr TD, costing us 15 yds and then subsequently missing the PAT. No reason at all to be doing something that fucking stupid, especially when you as a team are getting your ass kicked. It's a microcosm of why this team never changes. Most coaches would have ripped him a new ass for that, I didnt notice any activity around him after it happened from our people though. Bad coaching.
6) Hooker and Overshown both got hurt, and in all honesty it should be the end of either one of them seeing the field in the regular defense. Love Overshown and he is a superb kid, does everything the way you want to see a pro do it. But his knees are shot and he doesnt look the same as pre-injury, and now he's hurt again. Before getting hurt last night he did not have a good game. Hooker has been God-awful for years and got beat several times again last night. No reason he should ever see the field again unless its mop up duty.
7) Virtually every negative statitude someone can come up with applied to our game last night defensively. It was an epic level horrendous performance. I dont see how they can fix all that's wrong with this for this season now and as noted above, it's fair to wonder whether Parker really was ready for this role now. It was a failing performance in game planning, execution and in game adjustments (there were none) in every way possible.
Just a mass disappointment in every way possible and I have zero optimism about this season moving forward. The team shit the bed the last two yrs and had a chance to come out last night and make a statement that things were different, and instead they fell on their ass and showed nothing is different. The team is still soft (physically and mentally) and makes too many stupid fucking mistakes. I didnt expect a 42-10 win or anything but what we saw was a massive shock to me in how inept we really were.
