Day After Thoughts: Ugly First win for Schotty

He said after the game he was "going to have a couple of Schotty's" and after seeing the offense struggle some and the defense fail to do almost anything at all, he needs it.

You can only put so much lipstick on a pig. This was a painfully ugly performance. Giants were missing both starting T's and then benched their primary backup T after he had a plethora of penalties and our D still couldnt do anything.

1) Hats off a little for Prescott, he came through in the clutch. Threw the ball well with maybe two exceptions, including an ill-advised throw that ended up being an interception. But he didn't have the best pass protection and was plagued again by his receivers/TE's dropping several perfect throws. Hopefully he can put together 17 games with what he has shown the first 2.

2) Javonte Williams was a sneaky good signing. Runs extremely hard and can get through contact, seems like he squeezes every yard he can possibly get out. Yesterday he also had a really athletic/explosive run too where he hurdled a guy. Also had a nice 30+ yd TD run. Catches and blocks well. Nearly had a 100+ yd game rushing. Isn't a back that "scares" people but he seems like he is a very dependable lead guy for us for now.

3) OL had some struggles, although the Giants front is very talented (probably more talented overall than Philly's now). Beebe struggled and then unfortunately had a severe ankle injury and couldnt get off the field or the sideline without help. Steele is just not good in pass pro. Guyton has some reps where he looks really, really good but is still inconsistent. It's gonna take these guys some time for sure. Hoffman is a solid backup at C but needs to work on snaps a little, but love his nasty mentality. Will be very interested to see if Nathan Thomas starts getting reps with the 1's, at least one reporter noted late last week that Thomas "was pushing for a starting job at both T spots" he had a great training camp and preseason.

4) Welcome to Dallas George Pickens. Had a really solid game and got rave reviews from guys like Tyler Smith for his leadership style in the huddle and on the sideline. Seems like he is in a totally different place now with his attitude. He's gonna get more and more balls thrown his way and really make tams pay for double CeeDee. In addition to 5 catches for 68 yds and a TD he drew two long PI calls. Also got completely hosed on an offensive PI call on him that wiped out a 19 yd gain and a first down (or right at the sticks) on a 2nd and 19 play in OT. Great addition to the offense.

5) Brandon Aubrey. Just wow. Dude is unflappable and a machine with these FG's from seemingly any distance. Best kicker I have ever seen and we are so damn lucky to have him. First kicker in history to tie a game on last play of regulation and then win the game on last play of OT.

6) Defense, just fucking yuck. The run defense was ok (except 1 play where Dooms' lovey dovey Skattenbooboo ran up the middle untouched for 24 yds) but the pass defense was just complete garbage. Busted coverages and plays where it was 100% apparent our slow footed safeties need to be put out to pasture. And yet Hooker and Wilson dont come off the field any. Dante Fowler had his 2nd straight mediocre to poor performance. He was brought here because of pass rush skill (two good yrs with us as a backup and then 10+ sacks last yr for Foreskins) but has been pretty much a zero there so far, and he starts too and gets a majority of reps. Sanborn is a gritty guy but should be a backup, and def should not be on the field in obvious pass situations. These are obvious changes that should be made, just no excuse to keep trotting those guys out there. They also need to mix up coverages some, the players clearly don't understand their assignments in many of these zone calls. The worst part of this is the Giants were missing their franchise LT, their starting RT and then benched their primary backup T in the first qtr, and we still couldn't get any consistent rush.

7) Team got dinged up pretty good yesterday. Liufau went out and never returned (but like last week, hardly played even though it is fairly obvious to everyone he is better than Murray, Sandborn and Clark). Beebe seems like he is set up to miss several games with a bad ankle injury. Then Turpin got hurt on a KO return (neck). x rays were ok he said, but if he cannot play we have a big hole at 3 WR and returner. Tolbert aint it.

8) Hard to believe after the first quarter or so, but we actually almost caught up to the Giants in penalties for the game. We ended up with 12 (v their 14). One of them was an incredibly dumb move by Lamb, who actually offset THREE Giants penalties on the same play with a dumbass taunting call. After a pretty clean effort v Philly, yesterday was more of what we have been made accustomed to for the last 15-18 years or so.

9) After two games, players I'd bench or severely reduce their PT: Sanders, Tolbert, Steele, Fowler, Hooker and D Wilson. I'd think about reducing time for Sanborn. I don't know who he permanently replaces but Liufau should be playing almost every down.

10) Will be interesting to see if Jaydon Blue gets on the field this week. Especially if Turpin ends up having to miss, we need someone with some explosiveness other than just CeeDee/Pickens. Hopefully he is ready. Also very curious to see if Thomas starts seeing some time at one of or both) of the T spots.

It's a win but definitely wasn't remotely impressive. After looking better in the 2nd half v Philly last week the defense was God awful for all 4 quarters yesterday. They can't win if the offense has to score 35-40 every single week. After getting a little optimistic after the Philly game, I now think we are in big trouble, especially if they don't win Sunday vs a very bad Chicago team.

Yep, all of the above.
Second line of defense linebackers just aren't good enough. And with that add me to the list of being confused over why Luafau can't get more snaps.
And the secondary wasn't just Wilson and Hooker.
Nabers and Robinson stole Diggs and Elams lunch money.
Time after time.
Regardless of Eberflus scheme.

Yeah, this "win" gave me Mike Nolan PTSD like syndrome symptoms.
I hope it's not a terminal case for the next 15 games.
Yikes.

Not sure I completely agree on they stole Diggs and Elams lunch money. When you play zone virtually every snap its hard to 100% pinpoint who exactly is to blame, but these safeties are never in position when the ball gets there. They are too slow. If you play a certain technique expecting inside or underneath help and it doesn't get there, that's not always the person you see closest to the receivers fault.

You have a point when the over the top help is not there in the cover 2/3 zone.
However, when focusing on Diggs or Bland in their individual trail technique matchups, both corners lost the majority of those snaps.

Is it me or did Schotty's post game speech/video not give anyone else the warm and fuzzies? It's obvious he's a player's coach. But when you're soft AND a player's coach, that's a recipe for disaster. The team is a reflection of their HC. I know, I know....MM was a bit on the heavy side but I'm not sure he was "soft," per se. Just something I'll be keeping an eye on.

Yeah, the reading out of individual accolades as though off a fantasy football checklist to the team.
The team shouting approval at each accomplishment that was read.
Seemed a strange way to tell them "Hey, be thankful for the win, but we got lucky and have a whole lot of work to do."

To each is own on leadership style preferences but I'm with Dodger on this.
