Yeah yeah, it's the now 0-5 Jets. Obviously nothing to raise any banners on, but 3 of their losses were by a total of 10pts and 2 of those were by 2 each.
It doesn't change the fact we were missing 8 total starters (if you include the guy who is now the primary #3 WR and kick/punt returner). We were missing 4 OL starters. Almost any other year in last 15-20 seasons this would been a complete debacle of a loss for us against ANYBODY, but not yesterday. Coaching matters, and it appears that at least offensively we have a very high end staff that can game plan and prepare guys, even guys we don't expect to play.
1) Another strong showing by Prescott. Had a few high balls early but settled in and threw 4 tds with zero picks, and maybe more importantly took no sacks (officially the Jets were credited for 1 for no gain) despite playing behind an OL of 4/5 backups. The Chicago game wasn't very good (by him or anyone) but his other 4 games he has been solid for sure.
2) Great effort by the OL, they pretty much neutralized the Jets front 7 and opened holes in the run game for a big day for Jevonte Williams. The pass protection was surprisingly solid as Prescott was rarely hit. It' only 5 games but I don't think it's far fetched to say this is the best coached and prepared OL unit we have seen since Bill Callahan was on the staff. We're lucky to have Adams and Riley. Nate Thomas had a great 1st career start and will be interesting to see if he stays on the field. Broaddus said after the game he thought the coaches would have to continue to play him. Bass and Hoffman might be the two best interior backup OL in the league. Solid start for Adenji as well. Coaching matters, and these guys are all well coached.
3) Jevonte Williams continues to impress, going off for 135 yds and 2 more tds. He breaks tackles at will. He's also a sensational blocker in blitz protection. Great addition to the team. Jaydon's Blue's debut was pretty ho hum although he did have a 30+ yrd kickoff return where he showed speed and explosive athletic ability, hurdling a guy. He also had a couple of textbook blitz pickups in pass proection. Will be interesting to see if he gets more reps in coming weeks.
4) Ryan Flournoy can play, and the Cowboys got incredibly lucky when nobody claimed him after he was surprisingly waived the week of the first game. Had a huge game yesterday with nice catches and plenty of YAC. Has a bright future here.
5) I still don't completely believe in the defense and the 4th quarter looked eerily similar to the previous 3 games when they couldnt stop anybody. But for 3 quarters they played pretty good and we had by far the best pass rush we have seen in any game this year. 5 sacks and nearly had 2 or 3 others. Also had two short yardage stops on 4th down and the strip fumble by Liufau after a big run was probably the play that turned the game around. The run defense was NOT good for most of the game though (gave up nearly 150 rush yds and almost 7 yds per carry, the only thing that kept it from being really horrendous was the scoreboard). That said, not as many blown coverages and again, the pass rush was pretty strong. I think they ran out of gas some in the 4th qtr (Jets ran a total of 73 plays) but it was progress.
6) Rookie Shemar James took over at MLB after Sanborn got a 1st half concussion, he had 15 total tackles and some nice hits. But he did get caught in the wrong run lanes a few times and cost us some chunk yards there. Learning experience for sure, but he has speed and range that Sanborn sorely lacks. Will be interesting to see if he keeps starting once Sanborn is cleared.
7) James Houston now has more sacks than Micah Parsons. When he is on the field vs the pass, he stands out. Rookie Ezeiruaku didnt get his first sack but he continues to get very close and he had 2 or 3 nice QB knockdowns yesterday, in addition to some good plays v the run. Clark and Odiggy are a great tandem inside. Sam Williams and Dante Fowler had sacks, and Fowler had by far his best overall game here. Could have easily had 2 or 3 sacks for this game was credited with a career high 6 QB knockdowns.
8) Too many penalties, although two or three of them were kinda bullshit. Diggs got hosed on his 15 yrs penalty for responding to a guy that head butted him (right in front of the ref). We got a couple of very iffy roughing the passer calls too. The upside is despite 4 backup OL playing, there were not a plethora of presnap calls or holdings as we almost assuredly would have seen the past 10 yrs.
Good solid win on the road, I certainly was not expecting it and had thought we'd probably lose. Instead, they impressed and easily won the game. Step in right direction but need to go into Carolina and play well there. Carolina is probably better than the Jets and Rico Dowdle is coming off a 200+ yd rush game. Need to tighten up the run defense for next week for sure. It was good the first 3 and 1/2 games, but the 2nd half of GB and yesterday was not good. Hopefully some injured guys come back.
