I honestly don't know why I should be mad, the game played out almost exactly like I expected. No reason to be surprised at our utter mediocrity.
This defense is one of the worst units in the history of football. They give this team absolutely ZERO chance to win. It's as poorly coached and schemed as any we have ever seen. Lets just take a look at some of the gems from today:
- Forced one punt, the entire game. The only other drive the defense "prevented" a score was the turnover on downs drive where the Chargers kneeled down and gave the ball back with a few seconds left.
- Faced the most sacked, most knocked down QB in the league and today and got NOTHING. No sacks, and only a couple of touches on the QB. And this was a Chargers team down to 4th and 5th string OT's.
- Defense has forced a TOTAL of 5 punts in the last 3 games. All losses.
- Defense has given up a total of 112 pts the last 3 games, an average of 37.33 per game.
- Chargers scored on 6 of 8 drives today (1 was kneel down at end of game. Vikings scored on 6 of 10 drives (one was kneel down to end game). Lions scored on 8 drives out of 12 (one was a missed FG, another was a kneel down to end game)
- The lowly Aints had 8 sacks today v the Jets. The Cowboys defense has a total of 9 (yes NINE) sacks since the bye week. They've had ZERO sacks in the last 2 games and only 1 vs Detroit.
There's just nothing they can do to win. This defense is abhorrent. Eberflus absolutely cannot be brought back and if he is, I may not watch a single game in 2026.
1) Offense played good in 1st half and should have had 3 tds in 4 drives, but a holding call negated a 2nd td pass to Ryan Flournoy. Secon half was not good but some of that could be attributed to some really stupid play calling and decisions by Schottenheimer. You're out of the playoffs and face a 4th and 4 against a team that has literally scored every time they've had the ball. Why not at least TRY to draw them offsides? Why not actually just GO FOR IT? What was there to lose? Why run a 4th and less 1 FB dive play behind an UDFA backup LG (from a tight formation, where their whole defense knew a run was likely coming). Why not use the probowl RB? Why not call a play action pass and give Prescott a run/pass option on it? Hell what about sticking 6'5 240lb Joe Milton in there and have him run a sneak or a option play? Just fucking awful play calling from Schottenheimer in the redzone again.
2) Why for the love of God is Kenny Murray still playing on defense? A perfectly executed blitz on 3rd and 7 left him with a dead in the rights should have been sack on Herbert, but as usual Murray fucked it up by whiffing and Herbert ran 30+ yds, and another score for Chargers when we should have been off the field.
3) Eberdunce is absolutely pathetic and should be shitcanned (again) tomorrow morning. But ST Nick Sorensen is a complete flop himself. He's ruined Kevonte Turpin's return game and the unit itself is so poorly coached that almost every time (which are few) he actually gets a good return its wiped out by a dumbass hold or block in the back. He's got to be canned as well.
4) Great game from George Pickens wasted. But glad to see him back to form.
5) Want to see the playbook for having a mediocre losing franchise year after year after year? Have a chance at Jim Harbaugh, but decide to bring back playoff flop fuck Mike McCarthy for another yr. Talk to HoF multipe Super Bowl winner Hoodie? NOOOOO. Have a chance to interview Ben Johnson, but jackoff in a corner for too long after another flop season from McCarthy and then let him go after Johnson has already been hired. Don't bother talking to probable coach of the year Mike Vrabel either, despite him REQUESTING an intro via Jane Slater to Johnny Walker GM. No let's settle for "continuity" with Brian Schottenheimer and bringing back this bumbling fucktard Eberflus.
6) Dak Prescott will never be worth the 60 mils per yr he got, but he had a really good yr this season and it's been wasted because of a completely inept defensive coordinator. The offense is playoff quality, but the defense gives this team zero chance.
7) Will be interesting to see if Tyler Smith plays LT the next two games (assuming Guyton cannot go) as it might be a hint to 2026. They could move Guyton to RT (which he did play at OU) and dump Steele and his ridiculous contract. Bass is serviceable at LG (he's a RFA but we control his rights) and they have Trevor Keegan (signed from Eagles PS) as another option. A value priced free agent could also be an option here.
8) Haven't seen an update on Ryan Flournoy's injury, they reported it on the broadcast as a knee injury (although it looked like a head/potential concussion I thought), hopefully he is good to go. He's really been a pleasant surprise and he has a bright future as a 2/3 type NFL WR.
9) One positive for the weekend, we improved the draft position of BOTH our 1st rd picks. So there's that. It's rare I hope for losses, but I am so sick of this team that I do hope we lose to Washington and NYG. Unlikely, but it's possible we could move up to close to the top-10 if we do.
