POINT MUGU, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys’ veterans arrived here Saturday afternoon feeling “unbelievable urgency” to reach the playoffs and compete for a Super Bowl title, tight end Jason Witten said.
The Cowboys failed to make the playoffs the last two seasons, prompting owner Jerry Jones and quarterback Tony Romo to acknowledge that the window appears to be closing on this group’s chances to win a Super Bowl.
“I don’t know when the window is opened and closed,” Witten said, “but there is unbelievable urgency right now.”
The Cowboys lost four of their last five games, including the playoffs-or-bust season finale against the New York Giants, to finish a 8-8 in 2011. Hoping to avoid another disappointing season, Jones signed several free agents and traded up to select the top defender in the draft, cornerback Morris Claiborne, sixth overall.
“We feel we have a good team,” Witten said. “We have to execute better. We have to play better in key situations. Just go back and turn that last game on. I think that is clear. Everybody has a clear understanding of that. It can’t be the same old story.
“But our actions have to speak louder than our words. That is the approach we are taking.”
