Cowboys eyeing Hall of Fame game

The Cowboys are on the short list of teams being considered for the annual Hall of Fame game to open the pre-season, per a high ranking source. The Cowboys were last in the Hall of Fame game in 2010 when NFL rushing king Emmitt Smith was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's no coincidence that legendary Cowboys guard Larry Allen is being inducted this year. Owner Jerry Jones will present Allen. Jones was also Smith's presenter in 2010. A final decision will be made at the NFL Owners Meetings this week in Phoenix, Az. The game is set for Aug. 4. Getting named to the Hall of Fame game would bump the Cowboys' number of preseason games from four to five. It would mean they would start training camp a week earlier and give them more time to adjust to the philosophy change on defense where they are moving from the 3-4 defense to the 4-3 under new coordinator Monte Kiffin. This would be a bad thing, IMO.

We don't need 5 pre-season games.

But it's a marketing bonanza, so I'm sure Jerry is pushing for it.

Ayuh, it is a bad thing. We can't stay healthy for 4 preseason games, now we might play 5? Fuck that. Jerruh doesn't give a shat as long as he gets his marketing.

Cowboys want to play in Hall of Fame game

Posted by Mike Florio on March 18, 2013, 8:37 AM EDT

With offseason workouts now limited, teams breaking in new schemes want more opportunities to prepare.

And there’s nothing like playing one more meaningless game to make that happen.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys hope to land one of the two spots in this year’s Hall of Fame Game, as the team transitions from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 approach.

Per Moore, the Cowboys are indeed under consideration for the game. Making the Cowboys more attractive is the fact that Larry Allen will formally be inducted into the Hall of Fame that same weekend.

The Cowboys last played in the game in 2010, only three years and — given the 2011 lockout — two Hall of Fame games ago. But given that the Cowboys always generate higher ratings, the fact that they played in the game so recently may not matter.

Under the “extra reps” theory, any team with a new coaching staff or a new offense/defense should be interested in the opportunity to open camp earlier than 30 other teams, and to have 60 more minutes of live reps.

Not interested in acquiring a 5th preseason game just so a couple of guys who won't make this roster or any roster in the NFL can battle it out.

Start a week earlier but camps open before the game, correct? So that week isn't really a week. It's not like Dallas will take the red eye to Canton, play the game and go right back to oxnard and resume camp the next day. They'll fly out a day, maybe two in advance, play the game and fly home with the following day off most likely. This of course assuming they'd put zero time into actually preparing for the game and devoting a little time in practice towards developing a plan for some of the aspects that they'd like to look at.

So, 3-4 days.

Sorry, if you're banking on 3-4 extra days of "reps" really paying off huge dividends you're already fucked.

Here's an idea. Instead of making the team a traveling circus, how about they just start camp at the normal time and work on actually making those reps count without having to be concerned with having the public spotlight thrust upon them.

Sounds brilliant.

Lets take a team that needs to work and have them fly across the country from la to Ohio and then back.

Then have them play games out west, then fly home resume camp and play two more games.

Brilliant. Hopefully they can squeeze in another trip to the beach maybe even Disney in Anaheim.

Definitely a way to focus on the new season.

Other teams aspire to the Super Bowl. Us? A meaningless exhibition game in Canton.

The problem last time we did it was we were splitting camp between California and Texas. Unless I am wrong, camp is not being split this year.

I think this team needs all the practice time and extra game time they can get, especially considering there may be a few young players/rookies being counted on for significant roles.

Jimmy Johnson hated the 5th pre-season game. Jerry Jones loved it.

They clashed on this.

I side with Jimmy Johnson for some strange reason.

It suck when you know he us right. Jerry Jones cares about nothing but credit and money. If you believe otherwise you're an idiot.

the article clearly states why they are interested in being in it, and you guys took the opp approach

shocking

You really think that's why they want it?

Did you also believe it when your girlfriends would say "It's not you, it's me."

I think in this case yes, that is their main motivation.

New defense, will lilely have alot of new starters/contributors (many of whom may be rookies) and we'll be getting alot of injured guys back.

They also need more competition time at some of the other areas, like OL.
