I'm still trying to find a definitive answer on how exactly a trade in-season effects the salary cap hit. I think the speculation that Ratliff would be cut now is kind of backwards. It seems they would just put him on IR and then cut him in the off-season. If he can play and they cut him, he'll sign with someone and could come back to haunt us this year. We gain nothing by cutting him.
Looking at all of the contracts it seems like it is now Jerry's (and Stephen's?) strategy to restructure all of our key players over and over again in the hopes that the new TV deal boosts up the salary cap significantly. There's a reckoning coming otherwise.
Case in point, do you guys realize we have given Miles Austin $13,742,000 in the last 2 years in restructuring bonuses alone? That's not counting the $17,078,000 base salary he got in 2010 or the $2,675,000 in base salaries since then. Nor does it include the $10,000,000 penalty the league gave us for Austin's 2010 contract. What the hell are we doing?
If we were to make the likely cuts of Miles Austin($1,573,200), Jay Ratliff ($1,304,000), Mackenzy Bernadeau($925,833), and Kyle Orton ($3,250,000) we would save just over $7M in cap space next year. As you consider that number, ask yourself what those 4 have contributed this year. Throw in the recently released Nate Livings' contract and even Bernie Madoff would be ashamed of Jerry's books.
If you aren't a fan of the constant restructuring, brace yourselves. Look at some of the contract jumps for 2014:
Tony Romo + $9,954,167*
DeMarcus Ware + $7,910,000
Brandon Carr + $6,785,000
Sean Lee + $4,570,000
Jason Witten + $4,060,000
Orlando Scandrick + $2,785,000
* differences between 2013 and 2014 cap hits
None of this includes free agents Jason Hatcher and Anthony Spencer, or impending extensions for Dez Bryant and Tyron Smith. I've screamed for years that Jerry's insistence on playing General Manager is killing this franchise. Now I'm terrified that the CFO will do us in first.
