Since we're getting ready to close out the final year in the first 4-year window for the salary cap cash floor, I figured this would be a good time to look back at a question I first asked almost 2-1/2 years ago. As soon as the salary cap is announced and the NFLPA releases their cash floor statements, this will come up.

Salary Cap Thought: Capologist's Wanted

:WOOT

Based on this article, Dallas was at 82.6% after 2013 and 2014.

Combined Cap 2013 - 2014: $256M

89% Cash Value of 2013 - 2014 Cap: $227M

Dallas Total Cash Spending 2013 - 2014: $211M (82.6%)

Using OTC, we can get cash spending and cap for Dallas in 2015.

2015 Cash Spending: $155M

2015 NFL Salary Cap: $143M

89% Cash Value of 2015 Cap: $127M

Running Total:

Combined Cap 2013 - 2015: $399M

89% Cash Value of 2013 - 2015 Cap: $355M

Dallas Total Cash Spending 2013 - 2015: $366M (91.8%)

One big spending year kicks the team up a bit and all is presumably well. Big fat signing bonus to Dez is cash spent for last year. Lets go a little further.

Projected Total After 2016:

Combined Cap 2013 - 2016: $554M (Cap of $155M)

89% Cash Value of 2013 - 2016 Cap: $493M

Dallas Current 2016 Cash Spending: $105M

Dallas Total Cash Spending 2013 - 2016: $471M (85.1%)

Dallas Current Available Cap Space: $11.8M

Dallas Cash Spending Needed: $21.3M

Now, you don't have to be a genius to see the problem here. Dallas has to spend twice as much this offseason than they have currently available. The tricky part here is cutting Brandon Carr reduces the cap charge, but it also reduces the team's cash spending by his base salary of $9.1M. The team frees up $6.3M in cap space, but they'll have to spend $9.1M more to keep pace with the cash floor spending.

What does this mean? More restructures, of course. They would have happened anyway, but the gurus in the front office have now found another motive for restructuring. They need to do it in order to avoid getting penalized for not spending enough cash over the 4 year period. Anyone know what the penalty is for not being cap compliant?

Draft picks. Steelers, Broncos, and 49ers all lost picks in the early 2000s. Each lost a 3rd rounder, 2 of the teams lost more than that.
