03/12/2012 - There were nearly two dozen NFL teams represented at the University of Montana's pro day on Friday, and any number of them would like to have Caleb McSurdy suiting up and making big hits next fall. Some of them, though, think it might happen on offense. McSurdy was one of 22 players who went through several drills in front of NFL scouts at UM, including speed drills on the SprinTurf of Washington-Grizzly Stadium. He'd been through all of them before at the NFL scouting combine on Feb. 27, but that was at linebacker. Some of these guys want McSurdy to play fullback. "It's awesome," said the 242-pounder, who was the Big Sky Conference's defensive
player of the year. "There's a few teams that just let me know that's what they saw me at. They tell you, ???Hey, we want to work you out as a fullback at your pro day,' and you just do it." McSurdy earned all-conference honors at tight end as a senior at Borah High in Boise, Idaho, and also played some running back. It seems safe to assume he excelled. "No, not really," he said. "I was kind of a bruiser. And not to throw anybody under the bus, but my O-line wasn't terrific. So there were a lot of 2-yard runs that took a lot of effort." Five years later he was back on that side of the ball, if only for an afternoon. "Obviously they want to see you catch the ball and run some routes," he said. "I went out and did that and felt pretty decent." McSurdy also re-tested in the 40-yard dash, and lowered his time from 4.97 at the combine to 4.68 and 4.70. "Coach (Aric) Williams had me at 4.66," McSurdy added. "I think he might've given me the home-town discount. But, good day." - Fritz Neighbor, The Missoulian

Rapid Reaction: ILB Caleb McSurdy
April, 28, 2012 Apr 285:29PM CTBy Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com Recommend0 Tweet4 Comments5Email Print IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys' part in the NFL draft ended when they selected Caleb McSurdy, an inside linebacker.

Pros: He's a sure tackler who is good against the run. Cowboys running backs coach Skip Peete worked McSurdy out at fullback, so there's a possibility of getting position flexibility from him. McSurdy was a captain his senior season and that was something coach Jason Garrett likes to have on his roster -- captains were respected by their teammates and they understand the team concept. He does have good instincts for the ball, especially against the run.

Cons: McSurdy isn't that big, 6-1, 245, and that could give him problems in taking on NFL-type tight ends and offensive linemen. He's not very fast and could be exposed against the pass. If he's moved to fullback, there's uncertainty about his ability to block and get to defenders.

Cowboys fit: The Cowboys could use another good tackler for the special teams units, and McSurdy was active on special teams for two seasons. He did return punts and kicks his last two seasons. If he's moved to fullback the Cowboys get a bulky, strong player who can make an impact if he's not afraid to mix it up. If the Cowboys move him to fullback, they have a veteran in Lawrence Vickers who can be a good mentor.

Could have had: Edwin Baker, RB, Michigan State; David Molk, C, Michigan; Matt Reynolds, T, BYU; James Brown, G, Troy; Kelcie McCray, S, Arkansas State.

Caleb McSurdy finally gets to area
April, 28, 2012 Apr 285:32PM CTBy Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com Recommend2 Tweet3 Comments0Email Print IRVING, Texas – Caleb McSurdy hoped to visit the area in January as part of the FCS National Championship Game at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, but Montana lost in the semifinals.

He got another chance to come back when the Cowboys took him with the 222nd overall pick in the NFL draft Saturday.

“Today’s been amazing,” the inside linebacker said on a conference call. “It was a little nerve wracking because I knew if I would get drafted it would be towards the end, so just to get that phone call and talk to Mr. Jones, so many emotions. I’m very excited and it’s an honor.”

McSurdy, 6-1, 245 pounds, led the Grizzlies with 131 tackles and was an FCS All-American. He joins a crowded inside linebacker group that includes Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, Dan Connor and Orie Lemon.

He is not very fast or athletic, but he shares a common trait from a few of the Cowboys’ other draft picks: He was one of the Grizzlies’ captains.

“I just think on a daily basis I tried to be an example of a guy getting it done on the field and at school and off the field,” McSurdy said. “And someone who worked hard, took football and everything that comes with it seriously and be trusted to make plays.”

The Cowboys also worked McSurdy out at fullback with running backs coach Skip Peete, but McSurdy said he is expected to play linebacker. The Cowboys have another linebacker/fullback type on the roster in Isaiah Greenhouse.

This drafting captains thing is being overdone. Why don't we just draft players from the service academies?

It's cool when they are amazing football players and they happen to be captains but some of us are acting like it makes up for a lack of talent.

sounds like they were all very productive players though...I havent watched anything on the Montana guy, but from the write ups it sounds like he was one of the better players in his conference. Sam thing with the safety we drafted, who's tape looks pretty good

Did you watch the guys video yet hoser?

Yes I have watched their "highlight" videos. They play no one in those conferences. A 7th round pick is whatever but the 4th round pick was too much.

I saw games against Colorado and Texas Tech on that tape by the way.

But with small school guys, in addition to the physical talent isnt it important to see them stand out? I think whats on there qualifies as standing out.

I have no idea whether he makes it or not, but he looks like a football player.

When they start handing out SB trophies to the team with the most merit badges, then I'll be impressed.

you mean the last pick in the 4th round, which is basically a 5th rounder..of which 4 players in ALL of last years 4th round started in at least half their teams games..

expectations for these guys are far too high

Not many teams vote a player to captain if he sucks.
