Broaddus: Free and Smith both benefit from flip

No one was more surprised by the problems Free experienced last season than I was. There were no signs that led me to believe he would be as technique-poor as he was. Free was the most consistent linemen the club had in 2010. He was rock solid in his footwork, punch, and body position, but in 2011, he frankly was a mess. The harder he tried to dig out of his problems, the more rushers were taking advantage of his struggles.

I thought Tyron Smith was going to be the one to struggle, not Free. Smith was a 20-year-old rookie who was put in the starting lineup from the word 'go,' but the one advantage he had was in the Pac-12, he went up against some outstanding rushers.

In 2011, Smith had some moments when he was less than perfect, but where you saw him grow as a player when after the first time he faced Jason Babin with the Eagles. Babin used some moves that left Smith way off balance and fighting just to stay in front of the talented Babin. In the second meeting later in the season, Smith played with patience and poise while Babin tried to turn him inside-out with spin moves. Earlier in the season, Smith would have been blocking air, now he was spot on with his technique.

There were also some outstanding battles with Justin Tuck and Ryan Kerrigan where Smith more than held his own both as a run and pass blocker. Tuck has always been tough to deal with because of his ability to get up the field with an explosive first step, but he is one of the better technqiue-playing defensive ends in the league. Kerrigan was an outstanding pass rusher while in college at Purdue and has carried that over with him to the Redskins.

One advantage the Cowboys have in making this switch is that Free has played as a right tackle in this league and did it very well while he filled in for an injured Marc Colombo in 2009. The footwork, angle of the rusher and punch will be different for Free, but again it's something he has done before.

Smith was a right tackle in college at USC and, as we all know, played right tackle in 2011. The same adjustments that Free is going to have to make on the right side, Smith will have on the left. One of my memories from the 2011 training camp in San Antonio was Smith with then offensive line coach Hudson Houck after each practice working on his footwork, getting away from the line until it was perfect. I don't see this as a problem and, as a matter of fact, I have already spoken to someone who has been with Smith while he is making this switch and the comment I received was that he is "a natural."

Not that Jerry Jones or Jason Garrett need my blessing, but I like the position switch of Free and Smith for two reasons.

Putting Free back on the right side will refocus him on playing with sharper technique at a position where he has had some success. Smith on the left side gives you an athletic, powerful player that has the ability to adjust to any type of rusher lining up on that side.

In this division, you had better be able to do that.

No criticism to Midswat - you do us a service by posting these articles. Thanks!

But what do people think about Broaddus? Does anybody here value his work or opinions? I think he's pretty awful. (which is probably why I should avoid opening threads that are clearly labeled as containing his stories).

He's not that good. That was a pretty cheesy ending too:

I like him. He's got industry experience, and he's accessable to the fans.

I pay more attention to his articles than say, Watkins or JFE, because of his background.

Theebs would be a good one to answer this question. I read a lot, but don't really pay that much attention to media guy's track records of past opinions or statements. I do remember that his weekly scouting reports and subsequent score predcitions last year were relatively accurate.

Hopefully.

If Tyron struggles to adjust and Free doesn't return to form, this OL might be one of the worst ever.

We all complain when we read lazy articles about leadership or toughness. Broaddus watched tape of hillsdale to scout Andre Holmes. If you're not happy w/ the work he's putting in then I don't know what you're looking for

He has some good info but can show a clear bias from time to time so I don't take what he says as gospel.

I have noticed that since he became a official DC.com guy he rarely focuses on any negatives or glosses over them, so his analysis suffers in my opinion.

Maybe I was too harsh. These writers have a tough assignment this time of year -- they must write several stories a week at a time when there isn't much news worth reporting.

Right. The mandatory enthusiasm thing gets on my nerves too (no matter who is perpetuating it).

Geez.

Personally I think both are going to be better than fine. I am not worried about the starting tackles at all honestly.

As far as broaddus goes, he hated wade and basically dogged Garrett everyday on espn, now he is at dc.com and all of a sudden he is writing right kind of guy articles and how eveurythings changed. Pretty obvious and pretty much to be expected. With Galloway he was 100% negative, with Mickey everything has miraculously turned up roses.

I'm also not worried about either tackle spot. I think we'll be fine there.

Its on the inside where I have concerns. Not so much with Livings. I don't consider him a stud by any means, but I think he's solid.

In a normal year, flipping tackles would be seen as a fairly big deal. Smith has loads of ability and certainly should do just fine at LT, but it is a major change and it isn't unreasonable to expect it'll take him a little while to consistently play the position well. I'm a little less concerned about Free returning to RT, but even he is coming off a subpar year.

We should also acknowledge that Free and Smith will be playing alongside guys they didn't even know a few months ago ... guys who haven't exactly distinguished themselves so far.

Also, Kosier used to make the line calls. He's gone. Somebody has got to step up in this regard. Bennett is gone too and he was an excellent blocking TE.

The entire OL situation is chaotic. The interior OL has got to be the biggest worry, of course, but it isn't as if everything is just perfect at OT right now ... that situation is in flux too.

That's pretty much what I was thinking... Wonder how much of an ahole he's going to be now that he's on the team payroll.

Though in fairness he's praised Garrett for the last year or so... Part of me wonders if some of that was angling for a job back.

And said it before, but I agree with ZC that this OT situation might not be seamless.

And you can bet that'll be the excuse if the OL doesn't play well: "But we had new starters at four positions! They were still adjusting!" Book it...

You are right.

In a way, they'll be right too. With all of the change on the OL, there is going to be a learning curve. They will look especially shaky / bad early on. etc. etc.

I'll admit I didn't read a thing Midswat posted after seeing his Avatar.
