As revealed on TXA 21 on Wednesday night, here’s the Cowboys 7-round Mock Draft 2.0 (The Michael Brockers Draft). This is what the Cowboys draft might look like if they choose to go with a defensive lineman, like Brockers, with their first pick:
1st Round – #14 – MICHAEL BROCKERS – DE – LSU
A 21-year old 6-5, 322 pound behemoth who has only one year of starting experience…you are banking on potential with this player…has the size you’d love to see in a 5-technique defensive end in a 3-4 defense…47 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks last season…has raw potential but only 19 bench press reps at the combine with a sluggish 5.35 forty time and a 1.77 10-yard split…26.5 vertical…8-9 broad jump…as a point of reference, Cowboys DE Jason Hatcher (6-6, 284) posted a 4.82 forty (1.72 split), 28 bench reps, 35.5 vertical, and 9-5 broad jump.
2nd Round – #45 – HARRISON SMITH – S – Notre Dame
Considered by most analysst to be the 2nd rated safety in the draft behind Alabama’s Mark Barron…a four year starter who played OLB early in the career before switching to safety…displayed playmaking abilities with 7 interceptions in 2010…captain…management/entrepreneurship degree…well spoken, bright, articulate…showed plus athleticism at combine with a 4.58 forty (1.57 split) and a swift 6.63 cone drill.
3rd Round – #81 – RON BROOKS – CB – LSU
A product of Irving MacArthur High School, Brooks (5-10, 190) was used primarily as the nickel cornerback on LSU’s talented defense…did see quality playing time behind 1st round talent starters Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu…opened the eyes of scouts with a speedy 4.40 forty time and a 38 vertical…flashed playmaking ability, scoring 3 defensive TDs the last two years…figures to be a dynamic gunner on special teams and could develop.
4th Round – #113 – TAYLOR THOMPSON – TE – SMU
Truly one of the most intriguing prospects in this draft…a Prosper High School product, he played defensive end at 6-6, 290 pounds for the Mustangs…since the season, however, he has lost 20-30 pounds and has made the conversion back to his old high school position, tight end…his 4.55 forty time and 37 inch vertical raised eyebrows of NFL scouts but what really caught their attention was when he ran pass routes…displayed impressive natural tight end skills and has seen a meteoric rise in his draft stock…some consider Thompson to be a top 5 tight end in a weak class…he could be drafted in the 3rd or 4th round.
4th Round – #135 – JOE ADAMS – WR – Arkansas :towel :towel :towel
SEC Special Teams Player of the Year who returned 4 punts for touchdowns in 2011, one of them in spectacular fashion (Google “Joe Adams”, “Punt Return”)…104 pass receptions his final two years at Arkansas…dynamic return ability, and was even used as a RB at times…not as reliable a receiver as others in this draft but should be a 3rd or 4th round pick as his return ability raises his stock…5-11, 179…4.46 speed with a 38 vertical but only 7 bench reps…to compare, fellow slot receiver prospect Ryan Broyles had 21 bench reps of 225 pounds.
5th Round – #152 – OLIVIER VERNON – OLB – Miami
The search for an edge pass rusher gets pretty dry once you reach the 4th or 5th round but Vernon could be a sleeper…6-2, 261…flashed 4.64 speed with a 1.63 split at his Pro Day…an impressive 31 bench reps and 34.5 vertical so he seems to have some explosion ability…only played a half-season in 2011 after being suspended for six games by the NCAA for accepting improper benefits then he decided to forego his final season so he is flying under the radar a little bit.
6th Round – #186 – RONALD LEARY – OG – Memphis
Reportedly, Cowboys Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan targeted this 6-3, 315 pounder for a private workout this spring so you’ve seen his name linked with Dallas…a 2 ½ year starter at left tackle, he also started 6 games at right guard his senior season…his lack of height dictates that he will be used inside in the NFL but he does have nearly 35 inch arms so he could be used as a backup tackle in a pinch, which is something to consider should either Tyron Smith or Doug Free miss time due to injury.
7th Round – #222 – GREG McCOY – CB – TCU
Dallas Woodrow Wilson product who was one of the top kick return men in the nation last year, averaging 30.6 yards per return with 2 TDs…5-10, 182…ran a 4.42 forty with a 1.50 split at TCU’s Pro Day…38 vertical…6.62 cone drill…very mature, well spoken leader.
