OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys have some young players working at center but are confident in the abilities of first-team center of the moment Phil Costa.

Injuries have forced the Cowboys to scrap their plans to have a battle at center.

But offensive line coach Bill Callahan said when guard Mackenzy Bernadeau is cleared to practice he'll get some snaps at center. Bernadeau was taken off the physically unable to perform list Saturday but he's yet to take his conditioning test that would allow him to practice.

Callahan said Bernadeau has a background playing center.

"We'll definitely give him snaps, absolutely," Callahan said. "He's one of the guys; we got three centers that are out in (Bill) Nagy, himself and (Kevin) Kowalski, so absolutely, he'll come back and get some reps there at that spot. We want to get him ready for guard, as well."

Bernadeau signed a four-year deal worth $11 million as a free agent this spring and has had more surgeries (2) than practice time (0). The Cowboys projected him as a starting right guard, but his health forced the team to look elsewhere at that position. He could still play guard, but the team wants to see how he looks at center.

I hope mcQ sniffs no part of the field. Dockery did good last yr. Id like to see him start at RG and then work Leary in when he's ready

Livings-Mack-McQ

It looks like Moe, Larry and Curly (or Shemp) to me.

I hate to mix metaphors (or analogies, or, more accurately, competing visions of negativity), but this OL situation has a rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic feel to me.

Honestly, what the heck is this franchise thinking? Someday my prince will come?

There is no plan in place.

dockery broke his ankle two quarters in against the niners.

then sucked against the giants in the final game.

he has no business being on the field with this team.

Neither does Costa......or Bernadette......or a good number of the players who will tryout for one of the interior OL positions.

we dont know anything about mack so why you obsess over baggin on him is beyond me.

Stephen peterman couldnt cut it here and fought through a tough time in detroit as a backup and turned out to be a good guard.

kosier wasnt wanted in sf then detroit had no interest in resigning him and he was excellent here.

so its premature to say anything negative about mack yet.

we have an excellent line coach and if he identified the guy as a player he wants in his system I will at least wait and see him play.

I would have hated to see what you thought of mark tuinei and nate newton in the early 90s.

Don't know anything?

Come on theebs.

The guy was basically forced into action because of injury. That's pretty much the extent of his starting career.

I hope like hell he is something more than a warm body but odds are he won't be some bad ass.

Not to mention he hasn't really even had an opportunity to work yet because he's been getting surgery's left and right.

What other players have done is meaningless because there's far more players who have bombed out than those who have made it.

I guess I give other NFL teams at least a moderate ability to judge talent.

Sure, theres some hits and misses. All teams do.

But if the best thing we can say about a guy after 3-4 seasons in the league is, "we don't know anything about it", then please excuse my skepticism.

How did that off-season meeting go?

Jerry : "what's our biggest weakness?"
Red Jesus : "I say interior offensive line and playcalling but we aren't going to do anything about playcalling so,...umm... interior offensive line. Any good linemen in the draft Tom?"
Tom C (looks at Jerry for answer): "ummm, I dunno."
Red Jesus : "New guy, Callahan, any ideas."
Bill Callahan : " I'm allowed to talk?"
Jerry: " I've got it! Nate Livings, Mackenzy Bernadeau, and maybe Derrick Dockery. Problem solved. We are sooooo going to kick the Giants ass."
