Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has assured fans that there is, indeed, "a little bit of method to the madness" when it comes to the club's approach to turnover this offseason.

And the following quote from Jones, it seems, has become one of the more noteworthy aspects:

"Players we want to keep, we keep them. Most of these players, I'm not going to single out guys, but most of them we were ready to let move on."

Though not referred to by name, former Cowboys safety Barry Church admitted to being bothered a bit by some of Jones' comments when asked about them Tuesday.

"I'd be lying if I sat there and said, like, 'Nah, that didn't bother me at all,'" Church said on the Dennis & Cowlishaw show [KESN-FM 103.3], "but it's a part of the game. It's a part of the business of the NFL. You gotta know that you can't really take much of it personal, even though, for a second there I kind of felt like it was a jab, but, hey, they gotta do what they gotta do. It's their organization. You feel like they're making the best decision to go forward, and hey, I can't do anything about it now, so best of luck to them."

In total, the Cowboys have lost 10 players in free agency -- seven on the defensive side of the ball.

Church was one of four defensive backs to leave Dallas. An undrafted free agent in 2010 who had spent his entire career as a Cowboy, Church signed a four-year, $26 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jones also said the following on Sunday:

"Now, there were a few if they would have been for the right price, we would have done it. But we certainly didn't want to get into overpaying for anybody."

Church and the three other defensive backs who departed -- cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne and safety J.J. Wilcox -- formed what was essentially the Cowboys' starting secondary in 2015. Church started 15 games, Carr started all 16, Claiborne 11 and Wilcox 13.

And though all four entered this offseason as unrestricted free agents, Church didn't think they all would be joining new clubs for the 2017 season.

"Aw, man, I did not think that was coming at all," he said. "Maybe one, or two of us, but I didn't think a full, clean sweep. But they've got a lot of young talent down there. They got Byron Jones, they got Jeff Heath coming off of a great playoff game, so they got a lot of talent to play with around there and I hope the best for them."

Church also said he feels the Cowboys' defense won't have any problems adjusting to their free-agent losses, in part because coordinator Rod Marinelli (who has been signed to an extension) is a great coach and "awesome motivator of men."

The Cowboys have offset key defensive losses with veteran signings in cornerback Nolan Carroll and defensive tackle Stephen Paea, in addition to taking a flier on defensive end Damontre Moore.

Meanwhile, Church looks forward to an opportunity in Jacksonville that excites him.

The Jaguars have been big spenders this offseason, adding, in addition to Church, high-profile names like defensive lineman Calais Campbell and cornerback A.J. Bouye.

Campbell, a second-team All-Pro last season, and Bouye, one of Pro Football Focus' top breakout players of 2016, join a unit that already features young standouts in edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. and cornerback Jalen Ramsey, and another big-money player in defensive lineman Malik Jackson.

"Well, on paper it seems like we can be a pretty good defense," Church said. "I believe they were sixth in the league last year, but the game isn't played on paper, so we're definitely gonna have to put the work in and develop a chemistry to get things rolling. But as far as potential, I mean, the sky's the limit. They got a lot of young talent out there, so I'm excited about the opportunity."

Could Church return to Dallas one day?

"My house is here, everything's here, so I'll be in Dallas once my career is said and done in Jacksonville," he said.

Slow news day. Who cares if it bothered him. I dont think Church stole money like some of these lazy bastards, he played to the best of his ability. Problem is that wasnt good enough.

Good riddance.

Allergic to interceptions. I have never seen a collective secondary more allergic to interceptions than the Cowboys over the past several seasons. I do not miss any of these bums.

and the two picks he had last year were thrown right to him by Cousins and Rodgers

I think the comment by Stephen was directed more towards Claiborne. I wanna say Carr as well, but they did nothing to try and replace him.

Stfu Barry. I can't think of a single great play in your career here. Not one. Quit being a little bitch, and go make that money you retardedly spend on Jordan's, and enjoy being broke in 3 years after retirement like the majority of all the other colored folks

Funny? I seem to recall him being pretty decent in run support, and the guy they're probably thinking can take his place (Heath) is a total trainwreck... horrible in all aspects of defense

Church's open field tackling the past 2-3 seasons has been pretty dreadful, and he is God awful vs the pass.

Heath at least has some range and has shown he can catch the football. I don't know if he actually will win the SS job or not, but I'd say the odds are actually pretty good that he is better than Church.

How does Church's dick taste? That's the only reasonable explanation for this post.

We're all good at safety, guys. Garrett just said Jeff Heath has been a really good football player from the start and stood out from Day One. :lol

I never got the impression he was saying we're set there and definitely wouldn't draft anyone, just that they thought Heath was good enough to compete for the job.

Based on what we saw last year and especially in the playoff game, he's probably earned the right to compete for the job.

Garrett on Jeff Heath

By Drew Davison

ddavison@star-telegram.com

FRISCO —
The Dallas Cowboys saw several secondary contributors depart in free agency, and that will rank among their biggest needs going into the draft.

But they might have their starting strong safety already on the roster in Jeff Heath. Coach Jason Garrett endorsed that possibility during a pre-draft news conference on Monday.

“Every time we’ve given him a chance to play on defense, he does something really good for our football team,” Garrett said. “Makes tackles. Makes interceptions. He’s just demonstrated that he’s worthy to be in this conversation about competing for that starting safety spot.”

The Cowboys have an opening at strong safety after Barry Church (Jacksonville) and J.J. Wilcox (Tampa Bay) left in free agency. Byron Jones is the free safety.

Heath, who turns 26 next month, joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Saginaw Valley State in 2013 and signed a four-year extension prior to last season. He has made his mark mostly on special teams, ranking third with seven tackles last season. In his limited defensive snaps, Heath was credited with 20 tackles, one interception and two passes defensed.

Heath had a hard hit and sack of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the divisional round playoff loss as well. Heath led the team in interceptions with two in 2015.

Heath will have competition for the job. The Cowboys have Kavon Frazier, a sixth-round pick who played in nine games last season, and will be targeting safeties in the draft. But Heath is an option.

“We feel like he’s able to compete for that spot,” Heath said. “Who knows what’s going to happen here in the next week in terms of who we draft, but we feel really good about him and his chance to compete for one of those starting safety spots.”

I wouldn't have a problem if he just said he's earned the right to compete. But he had to get all over-the-top flowery about how he's always been really good and stood out from the very start.

Really? Then why wasn't he playing in front of those bums we just let go?

I actually have always thought Heath might have something because he is kind of a sneaky good athlete. But don't blow smoke up everyone's ass by saying how outstanding he was from the very beginning. That's crap.
