Kellen Moore ready for work with Cowboys' first team
Todd Archer
ESPN Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. -- Kellen Moore had an inkling Saturday night he would take Sunday’s practice snaps with the Dallas Cowboys' first-team offense as Tony Romo got a day off. He’s not sure he will get that heads up as camp goes on, which isn’t a bad thing for a backup quarterback.

Most of the time No. 2 quarterbacks are called on with little heads up in games.

“It’s valuable reps because you don’t know how much time you’ll get with those guys,” Moore said. “If you end up playing with them, hopefully you get some continuity.”

Romo is expected to return to practice Monday when the pads come on for the first time.

Moore played in three games last season, starting the final two. He had four touchdown passes and six interceptions, doing just enough for the Cowboys to believe he can serve as Romo’s No. 2 for an entire season. Throughout the offseason, the Cowboys passed on veterans available, with Nick Foles being the most recent. The Cowboys nearly traded back into the first round for Paxton Lynch but ended up selecting Dak Prescott instead.

This is the first time in his career that Moore has come to training camp with a job almost secured.

“Having those higher number of reps (in practice), being with the second group, jumping in with the ones, obviously those are all very valuable things, so you take advantage of it,” Moore said.

While developing timing with receivers Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley and tight end Jason Witten is important, Moore believes another aspect of the work with the first-teamers is more important.

“I think a lot of it is the communication with the O-line,” Moore said. “Tony and (Travis Frederick) work a lot together. They’ve got to communicate a lot, make adjustments and stuff, so I think it’s important when I get those chances to make sure Trav and I are on the same page with things.”

Reports were players could fall asleep while waiting for the ball in the air after he threw it.

It's almost entertaining to wait and see what sort of absurd and/or atypical-to-winning signing or strategy we will get from Garrett via Jerry and Stephen. Okay. So Garrett will want to give Kellen the Matt Johnson eternal roster spot but the team will end up trading a 3rd round pick for former Linehan QB and current Norv Turner QB Shaun Hill. Even though they could get a tall strong armed player who wins like Foles, Garrett will promote the concept of having a player who knows the system over a player who can win.

They could also just go with Showers. I'm interested to see Showers play in pre season but I sure as hell don't want him as the primary backup this year. And please don't let you be right about Shaun Hill.

Please. It has not and will not matter what we do at backup QB. We made that bed. We were effed the moment Jerry lost his nerve and didn't move up for Lynch.

Elliott strained his hammy. Does that count?

oh shit, really?

That'll be a season killer considering everyone is expecting him to have a 2014 Murray like season (as a rookie, lol) and save them from their shitty defense

True. I still think Lynch will end up being the best QB out of this year's bunch.

Two things are guaranteed at the start of every Cowboys camp

At least one but usually multiple players will be suspended for drugs

And one or more players will be severely injured and lost for a good part if not all of the season

Now that the midget is gone it's time to ride the Dak train once Romo goes down

Do or die, Dak or bust

Fuck it, throw him to the wolves!

I'm a little cynical when it comes to the Cowboys but if they continue to refuse to sign a quality backup (Foles) they might as well see what Dak has (or Showers for that matter).

This coaching staff couldnt win with Staubach in his prime, they never heard of the word adjustment. Doesnt matter who the back up is. When Romo goes down, and he will, season over.

I agree 100%. And the shitty thing about that is no matter how bad he does Garrett isn't going anywhere.

If Romo goes down we ain't winning shit

So at that point get Dak some trigger time and live fire

See what he's made of

It will only help him down the road

I don't give a shit if we buy a shitty back up

We did that last year and it didn't matter

None of our back ups did

So just give Dak all the reps and let him learn under pressure

So after throwing the guy under the bus publicly, now Nick Foles is an option.

Kellen Moore's broken fibula sends Dak Prescott flying up Cowboys' depth chart; will team add a veteran QB?
By David Moore

OXNARD, Calif. -- Kellen Moore waited four years for a chance to prove he can be a solid backup quarterback in the NFL.
Four days into this training camp, his opportunity has turned to disappointment.

Moore had to be taken off the field on a cart late in Tuesday's practice. A source said the quarterback suffered a broken right fibula. It's unclear how long he'll be out.

The injury accelerates the rise of rookie Dak Prescott up the depth chart and sends the Cowboys scrambling to find a veteran replacement.

"We'll know a little bit more after we do some X-rays and things like that,'' owner Jerry Jones said, announcing the break as he walked off the practice field. "It's regrettable. We'll just basically take a look at it and address it from here.

"I don't have any comments about what, if anything, we'll be doing from here.''

Jones was adamant that Moore was the team's backup quarterback in his opening news conference last week, saying the club had no interest in veteran Nick Foles. That has obviously changed with Moore's injury.

Club officials were meeting Tuesday evening to discuss whether to pursue Foles or someone else. The Cowboys want to move quickly to ensure that the training camp plan it has in place for starter Tony Romo -- two days on, one day off -- can continue and to get the new quarterback up to speed in the system.

Video shot by Tyler TV station KLTV shows that defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye pushed left guard Jared Smith back into Moore during one of the final team drills of the day. Smith's left foot then appeared to step on Moore's right ankle.

"It'll be a tough loss for us, but somebody has to step up,'' said receiver Lucky Whitehead, who was on the field when the injury took place.

"Hopefully, we can get him back soon.''

Tight end Jason Witten has spoken several times in recent months about how good Moore has looked during the team's off-season program.

"Your heart hurts for him,'' Witten said. "He works really hard. He's constantly taking notes. He's studying. He's communicating.

"At that position, I've seen it with Tony for as long of a time as we came in. You never know when your [opportunity] is going to happen.

"He'll continue to fight. That's who he is, that's who he's been his whole life. He'll bounce back, I'm sure.''

The injury, at least for the moment, pushes Prescott up the depth chart to No. 2. The Cowboys' fourth-round pick became a starter in high school and college because the player in front of him was injured.

"I saw some guys come at his feet and him go down,'' Prescott said. "It always sucks when a guy gets hurt. You don't wish that upon anybody.

"I just have to come in each and every day and get better. That's all I'm worried about," Prescott said. "My main focus is just to come in and make sure these guys hold me accountable and I hold them accountable. Just be my best every practice.''

Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and quarterback coach Wade Wilson have both commented about how good Prescott looks early in this camp.

"Honestly, his demeanor, his intelligence,'' Romo said Monday when asked what impressed him about the rookie quarterback. "He's a smart kid. He picks things up quickly. And for rookies that's not always the easiest thing.

"So I think that's been as impressive as anything, his ability to pick it up and then go do it.''

Witten added, "Dak is doing good. He's showing this stage is not too big for him.''

Head coach Jason Garrett said during last week's news conference that the team was excited by Moore's potential and "we're going to give him an opportunity.'' That's when Jones chimed in and declared Foles wasn't an option.

Why?

"We can't get him any snaps,'' Jones responded. "We've got four that are going to get snaps.''

That number is now down to three, which puts Foles and other veteran options into play.
