Sounds like UDFA S Ryan Smith pushed him off of the roster.

Garrett raves about his ability to play both in the box and as a single high safety. Traits that they hoped they were getting from Matt Johnson. Only problem was that Matt couldn't stay out of the ice tub.

Ryan Smith wasn't terribly productive at Auburn, but as a Senior last year, did nab 3 INTs and contributed 6 tackles in the national championship game.

Safeties don't have to make alot of tackles on good teams.

I think Smith is a tweener. Good athlete but not really a Safety or a Corner. Dimeback and Special teamer maybe.

True, but this is college. You expect these starters from big programs to be all over the place and in on every action.
What I said is true at all levels, from peewee on up. If your safeties are major contributors tackle wise, you're a pretty poor team defensively.

The good teams simply don't have the safeties making a majority of plays.

That's what makes it so difficult to evaluate safeties. The ones with gaudy numbers have those because, they had to have them.

Ryan Smith was thrown on repeatedly against the fins. He was pretty shitty. Ahmad Dixon reminds me of Ernie Sims. We are one injury away from the Jeff Heath show again.
