For those who didnt listen or see the news, Spawn dropped the bombshell that the team has zero intention of trying to sign George Pickens to a longterm deal now and wants him to play on the franchise tag for 2026.

This may or may not be a good thing. Perhaps there's a chance that they've already discussed this with Pickens and his agent and they are ok with playing for 27 million or so this yr, betting on himself to become the highest paid WR in the league next yr. (as one of the reporters suggested).

On the other hand, more likely the idiot Jones' just have no sense of how to plan roster management and now have backed themselves into a corner. The defense is full of holes at every level and badly needs quality bodies, and instead they may have to cover themselves at WR now and use an early pick there in case Pickens is gne or doesnt show up.

bengals franchise tagged tee higgins twice, ultimately signing him as the highest paid WR2 in the nfl

joe burrow and ja'marr chase are the highest paid QB-WR duo in the NFL

which duo comes in 2nd place? dak and ceedee

Impossible to truly guess which players we end up with, obviously dependent on what 11 other teams do in front of us and whether we ultimately move up, or even move down.

The move I would totally hate and be disgusted over though would be picking a WR with either of our 1st rd picks tonight. It's just stupid and would be a massive failure in roster management. I really believe the Jones' and McClay spoon fed that shit to the idiots in the local media in the hopes they'd take it and run with it (and they did) in the hopes it would influence either someone right ahead of us or right behind us to pull the trigger on Tyson (and/or Tate and Lemon). The math is pretty simple, 11 picks ahead of us and there are 6 really, really good defensive prospects. Bailey, Reese, Styles, Downs, Bain and Delane. We need 6 offensive players picked in some combination to land one of them (unless we move up).

The only way a move for a 1st rd WR makes sense is if they have a trade already worked out for Pickens, which they say is not happening. Ian Rapoport also reported the Cowboys have zero intention of trading him and I believe it. He'd also have to sign his Franchise Tag tender to be traded, and according to all reports he has not done that.

OL I have similar feelings about as WR, it shouldn't be considered. Needless to say it's a little bit of overkill to use yet another 1st rd pick on an OL this soon, although with Steele being no more than mediocre to average and Guyton in year 3 (which will be very telling for his future) I could understand OL more than WR. Day three is where they should be looking for OL help (and seems that has been the focus with that unit)

The defense has a few (very few) good pieces, we need help at all 3 levels and have 2 first rd picks. They should come away with two bonafide defensive starters here no ifs, ands or buts. Almost any combination is fine as well. I'm also fine with the idea of moving up to ensure they get one of those best 6 defensive players as long as we don't sacrifice both 1's and get nothing in return (ie, 12 and 20 for 6 alone). I also don't hate the idea of trading down twice if the board gets run of the primo guys.

The real icing on the cake is getting one of those top 6 guys and then coming away with an extra day two pick (or picks) in addition to our other 1st (which would obviously be later than 20). Plenty of guys in the mid-20's to early 30's that would be great additions (The Stache!) and we'd still get another top-100 pick.

Other predictions/thoughts for tonight and rest of weekend:

1) We'll make trades involving picks and veteran players. It's unlikely they can fill all the areas of concern on defense with just draft picks, so I think at least one veteran will be added via trade.

2) I think at least one of our current players gets moved, either for an extra pick or as part of a deal to move up in some round. TJ Bass (has the most value I would think), KeVontae Turpin and Luke Schoonmaker would be the 3 obvious players that might get moved. Turpin might have some middle round pick value (maybe 4th or 5th rd if someone really wanted him). He didn't show much as a true WR last yr (even though they said that was part of their hope for him with the new contract) and his return effectiveness was nowhere near what it was the previous couple seasons. He makes too many boneheaded decisions. Schoon probably has very little value unless it's someone who already knows him and likes him (like Harbaugh with Chargers). McCarthy supposedly loved him but they have TE's in Pissburgh.

3) I've mentioned a few times, I like Garrett Nussmeier for us and think he has some quality developmental traits. Ideally we'd acquire another day two pick and if so, am totally good if we used a 3rd on him. I don't think Milton makes the 53 as a backup here, but getting Sam Howell as a legit backup was a good move that I liked. Nussmeier is the son of an NFL/college coach and he does have a live arm. Good developmental #3 prospect.

4) We need tons of help on defense, but I do think using some day three picks on offensive depth makes sense. Backup OL help, another TE (preferably someone with movement skill to stretch the field some) and maybe another developmental WR/return guy (especially if Turpin gets moved, which I would like now). Zachariah Branch from Georgia is a perfect Turpin replacement IMO. FAR better WR skills while also being more than capable in the return game.

5) As noted in my other post, almost any combination of two defensive guys at 1A and 1B for us is a win. But this team has a few years of struggles with back end communication and misalignment problems. If they get Caleb Downs and Jacob Rodriguez, those issues are a thing of the past and a MASSIVE improvement with these two. Probably two of the most football cerebral guys in the draft while both being proven playmakers.

6) Mentioned Nussmeier and Branch as a couple non 1st/2nd rd guys I like for us. A few others: QB Cole Payton and Cade Klubnik, RB Emmett Johnson, Eli Heindenreich, WR DeZhaun Stribling, Colbie Young TE Oscar Delp, Eli Stowers, Sam Roush, Dallen Bentley, OT Drew Shelton, Aamil Wagner IOL Beau Stephens, Trey Zuhn, Pat Coogan, James Brockermeyer, DL Chris McClellan, Nick Barrett, Kaleb Proctor, Edge R Mason Thomas, Romello Height, Jaishawn Barnham LB Kyle Louis, Kaleb Elams-Orr, CB Malik Muhammad, Chandler Rivers, Daylen Everette FS/SS Bud Clark, Jokobe Thomas, Cole Wiesniewski

7) I hate the Stealers and everything about them, but if their fans threw shit at Goodell tonight and it injured him enough to have to sit on the couch for a few days instead of seeing his dumbass smirk and BS on TV for 3 days I'd have some newfound respect for them.

They better not piss away next years second just because they dont want to trade #20.
I think we are out a 4th and 5th already for 2027, in addition the other 1st rd pick we moved for QW. Hopefully they wont move any other picks.

They clearly don't trust him enough to give him a long-term deal, and they shouldn't. That Detroit game still sticks in my craw. Make him play for his supper year by year.
