You're assuming that Brandt's interest was sincere. I think he was pulling Irv's leg. You don't get the most out of Dorsett or Campbell by making them share carries. And I doubt that notoriously cheap Clint Murchison wanted to invest millions in the RB position.
That's what the NFL has to worry about. Even if the plaintiffs can't prove that the NFL was negligent regarding safety, the jurors might stick it to the league as a form of back payment to older players who toiled for puny salaries and punier pensions.

That's not what most cities tell firemen/police when they're hurt on the job. The difference is that the city of the NY wanted the rest of us to pick up the tab.
