It was the whole plan.
On Samsung TVPlus there's a channel showing only Bob Barker era episodes of the Price is Right. Only the occasional motorcycle or car we see is imported - everything else we see on that show is made in the US! It struck me the other day how we've been assimilated economically. It's a stark realization and I don't see any way it can be fixed.
