Just a boneheaded play for a guy with his experience. Take the sack. Get an intentional grounding penalty, punt!

He made the right play. He just didnt have the arm strength to execute what he was trying to do. I also don't think when he let it go that he really believed any Giant defender could get there to even make that type of play on the ball.

The Giant defender did make a great play as fyi. That was not an easy catch for a DB.

WTF! YOU as a player need to know your capabilities. YOU need to know if you can make that throw. YOU have the responsibility to judge it in the moment. YOU need to know if you can set your feet!

Therefore it was the WRONG decision!

No, it's common sense that most veteran QB's try to employ. Throw the ball away to avoid the sack and lost yardage.

He wasn't trying to make a stupid play with a stupid read and force the ball into double or triple coverage or anything.

He just needed to heave it further out of bounds.

That said it was 3rd down so maybe just sliding down and giving himself up would have been better (the Giants did have timeouts left though) but punting from the 35 yard line or so would have been better for field position than the lost yardage spot.

I don't like the throwaway rules the way they have it (you know, protect the QB at all costs) but the rules allow QB's to blatantly throw it away to avoid sacks outside the tackle box (I think the ball has to go past the LOS) but thats how they have it set up.

D, let me ask you a question and I'll throw this out there to the other 8 members to answer as well. How many times in all our years of watching football have we seen an INT on an attempted (out of bounds) throw away where the QB wasn't hit?

I mean, I guess the root of my question is simple........what are you defending here? I don't think I've ever seen a QB try to throw the ball out of bounds resulting in an INT. If that's the QB you're defending and then putting the blame on arm strength, then we're toast.

I agree with you that he was trying to throw it away. But that doesn't excuse the INT. And, to make it worse, it was at a pivotal time of the game where we could have taken control going into the half. Obviously, I'm no fan of Dak so the play itself doesn't surprise me coming from him.

Well, upon looking at this I think my opinion may have to change. He should have thrown it away right in from of himor maybe right at the 1st down stick there.

I always assumed he was simply trying to heave it out of bounds. Looking at this, maybe he thought he was throwing it on the sideline (or close enough) that only Flournoy could have a remote chance of catching it. Now he himself said after the game he was trying to throw it away, but Flournoy is in the picture but can't get to the sideline. Instead Holland comes from a little further up the field and makes a great sliding catch.

Looking at the beginning of the play, it's only 3rd and 5 and they have plenty of time left. Most of the receivers go long, except for Jake Ferguson who you can't completely tell if he is open or not. Am assuming Prescott also doesnt see him at that point because he is now having to run to escape pressure. I think its also fair to say this was a bad play call by Schottenheimer (unless Prescott changed the play). Just get the 1st down in that situation, not all the receivers should be going on longer routes IMO.

Need to see more of that play to draw a definitive conclusion.

That said, Schottenheimer did say he didnt think Clark or QW played up to specs.
