This is what leftists don't seem to understand. Socialism and communism require government oppression. Everyone must participate or the system fails. If you opt out, you have to be forced back in. This all means there has to be an oppressive ruling class. The ruling class cannot allow anyone to dissent because these systems being oppressive will naturally be rejected by the people if given the chance. The ruling class becomes corrupt and then the oppression becomes the means of keeping the ruling class in power where they get all the benefits of society while providing none to the citizens.

Orwell's "1984" was written as a warning about the reality of communism. He covered it much better than I can, but if you recall the end of the book, the reason for Big Brother, the torture, killing and oppression was all about keeping the ruling class in power. It had nothing to do with the welfare of everyone.
