I have a strong opinion I believe to be based on historical evidence readily available to all but what say you?

I think ultimately Jimmy put in 5 years and had enough of Jerry's shit, had enough money, and decided he needed a little down time. I think when they did the news conference saying it was a mutual decision, that was strictly agreed upon as a face saving mechanism beforehand for Jerry in front of the cameras. As usual Jerry couldnt save himself from his ego and would look like the enormous jackass he is by firing a coach coming off back to back SB wins. This is what I believe played out.

Jimmy admits in his book he was ready for a change and even sabotaged his position somewhat by saying he'd like the Jacksonville job if it were offered. He says he has always been a "vagabond" and grew tired of a job every 5 years or so. Publicly still, he takes half the blame for what happened.

Jerry violated their verbal agreement on division of labor between them on numerous occasions Jimmy also documents, and although Jimmy insists it was "mutual agreement" that he would leave and Jerry paid his contract out to the tune of 2 million or so, I have to believe Jerry had come to the decision that Jimmy's usefulness to him had ended.

Anyhow, can't call it a firing.

Bar slightly lowered: Two SB wins in five years no longer useful. One playoff win in eight and a half years still useful.

Jerry just never had any respect for coaching as a profession and has been trying desperately and obstinately to prove his assertion that "100 guys could coach this team."

And he's right but not in the way he meant. 100 guys or really ANY guy could coach the team. But not just any guy could coach it successfully.

Jerry fucked it up royally, but Jimmy has admitted he did not want to fulfil the 10 yr contract he had either, and ultimately always wanted to go back to south Florida.

We'll always wonder how many more Super Bowl could have been won but things might have not been any different than the 3. If people arent happy where they are things just arent the same. Both guys are to blame. And both guys lost an opportunity to do something that had never been done before. But the pursuit of that wasnt as important enough to either to swallow some pride for something greater. But ultimately Jerry was the bigger fool becuz as the owner he should have done everything possible to keep that ship afloat.

Bottom line, we dont know everything that went on between the two and how much damage was done to that relationship. Buts its a real shame.

Real simple. He was fired. When a coach leaves, he is not entitle to the remaining years of his contract. Jerry fired him and paid him to leave. Jerry made it so uncomfortable for Jimmy Johnson to stay with the Emmitt Smith hold out, firing of Wooten and Ackles, changing the personnel department hiring Larry Lacewell, constantly taking credit for football moves/trades (Jimmy never took credit for Cowboy business moves and deals), and final insult. He did the same thing with Bill Parcells (TO, Romomania, etc.) and Tuna resigned. Jimmy was fired.

That final insult is the answer to your question. Jerry said he was going to fire Jimmy and that he could find a 100 coaches to do what jimmy did and that he was going to fire him and hire Barry Switzer. Jimmy Johnson was fired and paid the settlement/remaining years of his contract. Switzer, Larry Lacewell's and Jerry's guy, was hired as Head Coach.

Was Jimmy feed up enough to leave. Yes, but it was Jerry that was making him feed up. Jerry meet with Johnson to fire him or have him accept more of Jerry's control of football operations. Jimmy thought overnight, said no and they had the 2nd famous news conference (1st Tom Landry fired Dallas Cowboys sold).

jimmy went to his mother and father after firing and cried that Jerry took his team. That is firing and that is fact.

"I lost my tolerance for a lot of things I probably should have tolerated. I probably should have had a little more tolerance with Jimmy Johnson. Seriously," Jones said.

What happens when you boss losses his tolerance for you.....YOU GET FIRED.

No doubt Jerry was the bigger fool but its not like Jimmy didnt contribute to it as well. Both were pushing the other guys buttons and it escalated. And Im willing to bet now that after all these years both guys if they were honest would say they could have handled it all much much better.

That's NOT a fact, it might be your opinion, but it's NOT a fact I have ever seen or even heard of, anywhere else. If it's your opinion, fine. If you're going to call it a fact, source it.

"You've taken my team away from me" was a LANDRY quote.
Jerry said he was going to fire Jimmy
He's never recorded anywhere saying he was going to fire Jimmy. He IS quoted by the NYT having allegedly said, "I should have fired him (Johnson) and brought in Barry Switzer." This in response to what Jimmy had said, about being interested in the Jacksonville job.
and that he could find a 100 coaches to do what jimmy did
The same source accurately quotes Jones then saying "There are 500 coaches who could have won the Super Bowl with our team." Not 100. And not "what Jimmy did."
What happens when you boss losses his tolerance for you.....YOU GET FIRED.
Orrrrr... What happens when the "boss" decides to let the employee out of the contract. A mutual decision, as they said. If he were really firing him for cause, he could have said "see ya bub" and not given him a dime and fought it out in court with him.

You've never had the actual facts straight, in any post I've seen you make here.

I thought so. Was gonna call bull shit on that. Definitely never heard Jimmy say that or anything about crying in front of his parents. Jimmy was smart and practical. Have a hard time seeing him cry about walking away from a horses ass of a boss, who gave him a golden parachute, then landed a cushy job at Fox for over two decades.

Does this surprise you? I can tell his age by the stupid shit he posts. And there's nothing wrong with a young fan but these guys are brainwashed into believing certain things that just aren't true. There's no changing their opinion....and Jerry loves them.

This question is a matter of perspective and semantics. Either way, the end result is the same. We lost a great coach and a dynasty was destroyed and dismantled well before it's time.

No doubt Jimmy was stubborn and thickheaded and probably did some things that led to him leaving (or being fired). But I also believe that Jimmy's actions were facilitated by Jerry's ego and meddling. Jimmy was a football man and Jerry was a wanna be; an oil man that wanted to play in an arena where he was woefully ill equipped. I firmly believe they had an agreement that Jimmy would handle the football side and Jerry would handle the business side. Jimmy's football acumen brought the team financial success and Jerry wanted more credit and influence on the football side. It just wasn't going to work. A career football guy having to listen to Jerry's BS about something he knows nothing about.

One of the best interviews I've seen was with Jimmy and Jerry and it was a pretty frank interview. Jimmy just comes out and says that Jerry can't do what he (Jimmy) does no more than Jimmy could do what Jerry does. Jimmy stated that he's been coaching and in football his whole life. It was a telling interview and you could sense the friction about the subject. I tried searching for the interview but I couldn't find it.

To this day, Jerry just can't accept the importance of coaching and it's relevance to winning. He hired BP just so he could gain enough credibility to build his stadium. Winning, as usual, was secondary in Jerry's world. And the fact that Jerry doesn't or hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor tells me all I need to know about Jerry and his ego. It would be like Jerry, in his twisted mind, admitting that he was wrong. Fuck you Jerry......

On his profile the dude claims to be "Cowboy fan since 1968" which makes him at least what, 54? But that alone doesn't speak to his intelligence or maturity level, I know.

I don't buy it. There are certain things in Cowboy lore that any fan that age would know. For example, Jerry stating that any one of 500 coaches could coach that team (not 100 as the poster stated). If he's the age he states, then the Jimmy years should be very fundamental to his understanding about this team. He's either nowhere near 54 years old or he is and wasn't a fan back then.

Completely agree Cup and I think that's very common with today's youth and it's a product of our education system. Today's rag liberal teachers teach political philosophy and ideology, rather than history and facts. It's the only way to successfully brainwash these kids.
