Jerry Jones: Cowboys won't draft QB with No. 4 overall pick

By Chase Goodbread College Football 24/7 writer Published: March 2, 2016 at 06:04 p.m. Updated: March 2, 2016 at 07:01 p.m.

The Dallas Cowboys' No. 4 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft has been widely speculated as an opportunity for the club to draft Tony Romo's eventual successor at quarterback, but NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt says taking a QB with that pick isn't part of the Cowboys' plan.

And few are as well-informed on the subject than the former Cowboys general manager who spoke directly with club owner Jerry Jones.

"Jerry told me recently that he will unequivocally not take a quarterback at No. 4, where the Cowboys draft this year. I believe him," Brandt wrote in are view of developmental QB options for the Cowboys in the draft. "It makes sense if you think Romo will make a full recovery from offseason surgery, will be your starter for at least three more years, and your team has a window of opportunity that will remain open by filling more glaring needs with the top pick in the draft."

That would certainly align with Jones' declaration at the Reese's Senior Bowl that the club isn't necessarily under pressure to find its next starting quarterback in the draft. Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has also said that, while the club needs a promising young quarterback on the roster, the No. 4 pick might not be the time to make that investment. Brandt finds Jones' intent to go in another direction with the No. 4 pick sensible.

I'd love to know what Gil Brandt thinks about and rates this year's crop of QBs

Now that's pretty interesting. Still don't totally believe it, but if Gil is right and not just senile, it would be bold of Jerry to directly lie to his face like that.

Yea they played it right after 10:00. Was kind of a bullshit interview though. He talks in circles about as much as Jerry does. They asked him a direct question if he thought Jerry was being honest when he told him that and he never really answered the question.

Yep, Gil is pretty senile at this point. I like reading his stuff on nfl.com for the draft but almost every time I hear him interviewed he is way out there.

One thing he did say is that Jerry feels his team is so close to making the playoffs that there is no way he would draft a QB at 4. Brandt said that if the Cowboys were as bad as Tennessee and has zero chance of making the playoffs Jerry would draft a QB. But since that is not the case (his words not mine) they will go with a player than can make an immediate impact.

During his conversation with Jerry, Gill was distracted by all of the strippers.

Who can blame him?

Distracted that they were there or distracted that Jerry wouldn't share?

Doesnt explain why he wanted Manziel so bad then two years ago. Did he believe the team was bad and had no chance to make the playoffs then?

Exactly! That's why I think they're both talking out of their ass.

I could see Jerruh being stupid about this and pushing back on Stevie, Garrett and scouts who might push for a QB though.

Jerruh has no plan and never has. He manages and makes decisions on a whim. Just like he had to be talked out of that idiot Manziel two years ago, he might have to be talked into the QB this time.

In the absence of an Aikman-like, Luck-like QB prospect, it really could be that the Cowboys "mind trust" isn't willing to spend an early 1st round pick on a QB.

I used to believe that Jerry routinely used pre-draft smokescreens to disguise his true intentions. In the past several years though, he seems to have been fairly truthful about the team's intentions.

If you believe you have a chance to draft the next Roger Staubach, you draft him no matter what.

There is a decent chance that's what Jerry thought of Manziel. It is frightening to think that the GM of the Dallas Cowboys could be that wrong, but ....

That very well could be, and I've said while I strongly support taking a QB at 4, if they don't believe there's anything special about one (or more) who might be available, then its understandable to pass. But after Jones crowed so loudly about how much they thought of Manziel, I cant imagine they arnt looking at Wentz and Goff and seeing both those guys as vastly superior prospects.

Yep, with the draft and free agency both really.

But who's the sure thing that we take instead of Wentz or Goff? There's no LT or Deion in this draft. Bosa? He has a lot of detractors. Ramsey? Great measurables but not a play-making machine. Jack? More Sean Lee than Khalil Mack.
