Jerry Jones says a 4-11 season by his Cowboys is no reason to panic.

The owner says he believes the Cowboys are closer to a Super Bowl than their record would indicate.

O.K., long-time Cowboys observers: what else would you expect the eternal optimist to say after he saw what he considered a potential Super Bowl season vanish before his very eyes?

Jones owns the most valuable sporting property in the world -- a team that draws 90,000 to its stadium on a weekly basis for games. And you expect him to use the R word?

No, this team doesn't rebuild. It flies the flag of fantasy.

Sure, the franchise quarterback managed to start only four games before the best offensive line in the NFL allowed him to suffer a pair of broken collarbones that, first, interrupted and then ended his season. And Dez Bryant showed the effects of an offseason boycott and summer training-camp holdout with a couple injuries of his own that cost him his Pro Bowl standing.

But the Houston Texans managed to win games with four different quarterbacks this season, including one the Cowboys discarded (Brandon Weeden). The Pittsburgh Steelers have won games with three starting quarterbacks this season and remain in the playoff hunt at 9-6.

The Carolina Panthers played the entire season without their best wide receiver (Kelvin Benjamin) and still own the top seed in the NFC with a 14-1 record. The Green Bay Packers have played all season without their best wide receiver (Jordy Nelson) and are still 10-5 and playing for a division title Sunday.

Injuries are not an excuse. That's why the NFL allows teams to carry 53 players on a roster. Starters get hurt and it's the job of the coaches to have their backups ready to step in. You know, the "next man up" concept. It is possible to win games with players off your bench. If you can't -- as the Cowboys couldn't this season -- then build a better bench. That one would be on the GM.

This GM still believes in Jason Garrett and his staff. This owner has too much money and too many years tied up contractually in Garrett and his offensive and defensive coordinators not to believe in them, not to trust in them, not to hope they can do better in 2016.

But this franchise isn't a healthy Tony Romo away. He's 36 next season and becoming brittle with age. He needs help.

This roster needs a quality backup quarterback who can develop into a starter inside of three seasons (or less). The Cowboys also need a running back, a wide receiver, an inside pass rush presence, another edge pass rusher, a linebacker (or two) and both a cornerback (or two) and safety with ball skills. Can you get all that in one draft?

This franchise also needs a coaching staff capable of developing those young players and willing to put them on the field.

Get all that done in the next 10 months and maybe Jones is right. Maybe the Cowboys aren't that far off.

The only thing that really needs to be rebuilt is the coaching staff, starting with the HC

This is exactly right. This is why it pisses me off when the Homers claim we should just rebuild through the draft. One, every team gets to draft. Two, you can not solve all of the team's issues with 6 or 7 draft picks.

I also don't understand the "free agent champions" or "off-season champions" that people like to point to, like the Eagles in recent history. Getting free agents doesn't have to be a blind grab of players. You can be strategic and sign quality players. It is not an all-or-nothing choice. The Packers, who actually do a great job of building through the draft, will use free agency to fill a need. Charles Woodson a few years back, Julius Peppers recently.

This improved drafting by the Cowboys is a myth.

2011 Tyron Smith, Bruce Carter, Demarco Murray, David Arkin, Josh Thomas, Dwayne Harris, Shaun Chapas, Bill Nagy
2012 Morris Claiborne, Tyrone Crawford, Kyle Wilber, Matt Johnson, Danny Coale, James Hanna, Caleb McSurdy
2013 Travis Frederick, Gavin Escobar, Terrance Williams, B.W. Webb, Joseph Randle, DeVonte Holloman
2014 Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, Anthony Hitchens, Devin Street, Ben Gardner, Will Smith, Ahmad Dixon, Ken Bishop, Terrance Mitchell* (waived and brought back)
2015 Byron Jones, Randy Gregory, Chaz Green, Damien Wilson, Ryan Russell, Mark Nzeocha, Lawrence Gibson, Geoff Swaim

So, out of the past 5 drafts, we have 8 projected starters for 2016 and maybe 16 projected players on the 53.

I don't see how its a myth CMD. There were a lot of good players drafted there from 2011 through last year.

Bruce Carter was an up and down player but did have two very good seasons. Murray was an all pro player. They were outbid substantially for both guys. Just because they arnt here anymore doesn't mean that draft was bad. Cant speak for Carter but I think its fairly obvious now that if he had to do it over Murray would have taken what we offered and stayed here.

You also have to factor in the rookie free agents they signed I think. They weren't drafted, but somebody scouted them and got them here.

That Dan Bailey guy is pretty good. Cole Beasley is a nice slot WR. Chris Jones has turned into a quality punter. Lance Dunbar is cursed with injury but I think he showed he was a nice player. Lael Collins was UDFA

I forgot Dan Bailey and he is damn good. Beasley is decent as well. We also signed Cole Beasley the same year we drafted Danny Coale, so our brilliant scouts had a much higher grade on Coale than Beasley. Jones is an average punter and those guys can always be found in UDFA. Dunbar is exactly what he is, often injured.

La'el Collins was a fluke. How often do 1st round picks get caught up in scandal the week before the draft and scare off teams from drafting him?

Don't forget Barry Church /sp

I actually didn't forget him, he was 2010 I think.

He sux as a starter but if he were a backup and special team guys only, he would be fine. Maybe as CMD (and myself) have lobbied for a couple years, his best role might be as a nickel/dime LB where he doesn't have to cover much ground downfield.

Don't know why his tackling sux so bad now though, he didn't use to be this way.

Business decisions. Saving the melon.

My thought is its a reflection on the coaching staff. They don't teach fundamentals that well and with the CBA the way it is regarding contact in practice and training camp, it makes it worse.

But, we see this league wide.

blocking and tackling is pathetic league wide due to the idiotic CBA restricting padded practice

Only dbair would look at this list and think we've done well. We've been piss poor on day 2. In addition, a lot of the folks you bolded have done very little outside of the 1st round OL and DLaw. Byron Jones and Randy Gregory have upside to be sure but Escobar, Williams, Wilber, Claiborne, Street, Hitchens are all replaceable to be sure.
