What IS that something?

"I think last year we found something special,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday from the grand opening of Dallas Cowboys Club at Terminal A of DFW Airport. “We’ve got to keep that. We’ve got the right leadership group that will bring that to the table.”

What is Stephen talking about? Is it the business management of the cap or the personnel and coaching management? I wonder if there was a Braintrust who was managing Jason's coaching.

They played better last year. Focus was better. Mistakes were fewer. They played with more attitude (especially offensively)

Taking the play calling out of Jason's hands and committing to the run game fixed all of our ills... or at least covered them up.

Defense on the field much less due to stellar 3rd down conversion rate. It's not anything "special" or a magic formula. It's pretty bland football every Lombardi winner in the last 10 years practices.

The only problem I had was an occasional play-call out of empty backfield or shotgun with fewer than 3 yards to go.

That should never have happened with Murray available. You need to threaten run as often as possible.

Pretty minor overall considering the progress the team made from 2013.

2nd 2, 3rd and 2, and 4th and 2 --- Redskins in OT. PASS, PASS PASS. Lost game, and #1 seeding.
I got no problem with uncorking a bomb on 2nd and 2, but NOT from empty backfield with 5 wide. This is the spot for the play action out of Jumbo, then uncork a bomb to Dez. They never do this.

But, your point taken.

Something special = two good coordinators, good health, a veteran Qb coming into his own maturity- and leadership-wise, Jerry giving more control to his son, and a head coach demoted to doing nothing but clapping, grinning, and making motivational posters at Kinko's.

But walk me through what was different last year? Marinelli? Murray and Callahan left. Linehan did not design or call the running plays last year, he took Callahan's play and decided whether to send it exclusively or pair it with a pass. So logically it's not continuing Linehan that Stephen is talking about. So what changed, AND will remain in place from last year in a way that is different from all the other years of Jason and his mantras and his system? I think Stephen is talking about managing the cap and contracts which may allow better players over longer periods. I think he is finally proud that careful financial management is in place rather than whimsical overpaying.

Truthfully that something they are talking about had been brewing for three years. We would have seen it quicker if not for the devastating injuries in 2013.

They have been slowly and meticulously been building this team and instilling a specific culture of competition, hard work, preparation and desire to win for your teammates.

What we saw last season was the beginning of the results of the new philosophy, great player and squad coaching, leadership among players, and desire to achieve.

I feel the person most responsible is Jason Garrett but Stephen Jones has done his share. He is spearheading sensible cap decisions and continuing to convince his dad this is the right way.

You've made some good, compelling arguments around here. I figured you were a bright guy but this one knocked you down a few pegs.
