IRVING — Jerry Jones has been named the NFL’s Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America, becoming the first Cowboys staffer to win the award since its inception in 1993.

The honor is sure to inflame a large segment of Cowboys fans who have long believed Jones has been the greatest impediment in the Cowboys’ efforts to recapture glory. But this season even his harshest detractors have to concede he’s did a good job in building a team that went 13-5 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

The winning formula the Cowboys concocted — possessing the ball and limiting the exposure of the defense — was borne out of Jones’ decision to push Jason Garrett to become a walk-around coach and take a more global view of the team.

The moves the Cowboys made last offseason also were critical to the team’s success. First-round draft pick ZackMartin became an All-Pro right guard. Linebacker Rolando McClain, acquired in a trade at the beginning of the summer, became a key player on the defense. Even edge rusher Jeremy Mincey, one of the team’s few veteran free-agent acquisitions, paid major dividends by collecting the most sacks and quarterback pressures on the team.

Jones seemed satisfied with his performance after the Cowboys when he was asked to evaluate himself earlier this month.

“I think I probably have done my best in not setting high expectations,” he said, laughing. “This was my best year. Maybe I should look at what experience tells you, and maybe we should go into the season with less high-paid veterans and less talk about how we’re going to take those veterans because we’ve got to put it all together with more of the Super Bowl [in mind]. Maybe go the other way and we got a better chance to compete.”

The new approach worked in 2014, when the Cowboys and Jones defied expectations.

PFWA EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR: 1993 – George Young, New York Giants; 1994 – Carmen Policy, San Francisco 49ers; 1995 – Bill Polian, Carolina Panthers; 1996 – Bill Polian, Carolina Panthers; 1997 – George Young, New York Giants; 1998 – Front Office, Minnesota Vikings; 1999 – Bill Polian, Indianapolis Colts; 2000 – Randy Mueller, New Orleans Saints; 2001 – Charley Armey, St. Louis Rams; 2002 – Al Davis, Oakland Raiders; 2003 – Scott Pioli, New England Patriots; 2004 – A.J. Smith, San Diego Chargers; 2005 – Bill Polian, Indianapolis Colts; 2006 – Mickey Loomis, New Orleans Saints; 2007 – Scott Pioli, New England Patriots; 2008 – Bill Parcells, Miami Dolphins; 2009 – Bill Polian, Indianapolis Colts; 2010 – Scott Pioli, Kansas City Chiefs; 2011 – Trent Baalke, San Francisco 49ers; 2012 – Ryan Grigson, Indianapolis Colts; 2013 – John Dorsey, Kansas City Chiefs; 2014 – Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys.

Super excited that the guy who went on record saying he wanted Manzel over Martin won this award.

This is Stephens award, IMO. Which makes me incredibly optimistic about the future once Jerry finally dies.

Although I do give Jerry credit for stripping Jason of play calling.

Lol, all of a sudden the media is the beacon of truth when people like what they have to say, otherwise their mediots

Hopefully they'll give jerri a little trophy he can carry around & play with all day and continue to leave the football decisions to the coaches & scouts

For someone acting like they're saying something, you're not saying anything at all.

Come out and say it. Do you feel vindicated because the Cowboys just won their 2nd playoff game since the mid nineties? You go with that.

I don't really have an issue with you, but as far as I can tell, you've been waiting for a chance to be right about this team. Congrats, I guess. If they improve going forward, you've only had to wait 18 years for your day in the sun.

at this board ignoring this outcome.
Nobody's ignoring the blind squirrel finding part of a acorn finally. It was bound to happen at some point. Some merely aren't as impressed as the mindless dolt cheerleader homers who have been predicting it for 18 years, and some don't believe it's happening in the future on a regular basis..

We live in a world where 7-9 next year wouldn't really surprise anyone. Anyone that is, who's honest.

Lulz at Fuz calling someone self-important.
No shit. And talking about snipes? Guy only comes in here to gloat about Jerry winning an award.

Once this thread has run its course, he'll go back to CZ where the posters there are impressed with his "film study" and juggle his nuts in their mouths.

:lol @ Fuzzy for dropping the latin but at the same time is trusting the word of the evil media he normally would not trust.

For the record, I think Jerry deserved the award.

Things worked out for him finally. Good for him. He can place the trophy on his mantle and continue to stare at it for years to come, trying to desperately convince himself that he is not a product of who he surrounds himself with and listens to.
