Tony Romo practices; Jerry Jones expects him to play

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is practicing for the first time Thursday since suffering two transverse process fractures in his back on Oct. 27 against the Washington Redskins, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports.

While coach Jason Garrett would not commit to Romo playing Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars at London's Wembley Stadium, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Romo will play.

"I'm anticipating him playing, have no reason to think that he won't and this will be a nice little practice session for him out there today," Jones said. "But my expectations are for him to play."

When asked if he would play Sunday, Romo said: "We'll see. I think we'll take it day by day and see what happens as we move closer. It's improving each day. We did some things today that were a positive. If it keeps going in that direction, we'll have a good chance."

"He'll hopefully be able to do what we want him to do on a Thursday practice," Garrett said, "and as the week goes on he'll feel good with the work he's gotten and he'll be able to play in the game. But we'll just take it day by day."

Garrett has stressed that the final decision as to whether Romo will play will be made by the medical staff with input from Romo. The Cowboys want to see how Romo functions in practice, but there is certainly optimism Romo will play Sunday.

Romo is on the same practice schedule he has followed since Week 2 by sitting out Wednesday. He remained at the team hotel to receive treatment on Wednesday as his teammates practiced.

"Anytime he can play, we want him to play," Jones said. "We're a better team, to be trite, with him playing. And so as far as the meaningful games, I'm talking about -- we didn't play him in the preseason obviously but felt we could have had we needed him to win the game -- but these games, we don't play many of them. You know that. And every one of them counts so much.

"Invariably anytime you do lose one of these games in the regular season, our experience with us, especially these last several years, is we needed every win we could get. There's no such thing as holding him out and forgoing the potential chance that we win."

translation: a guy who should probably be in a hospital bed will be forced to start because I've made such a mess of the backup position.

I think we will be getting our QB of the future next draft, unless Weeden somehow turns it around this season.

Jerry thinks this season's early success was his brilliant "invest in the O line" strategy (which it would have been a good strategy had it actually been the plan) and not Romo, so I think we will be spending a 1st or 2nd on a QB. He seems to be convinced defensive players aren't really needed.

Yup.

But then again, he is saying he's gonna get 5 more years out of Tony, so don't be expecting a 1st round QB in any draft anytime soon. If pattern of QB transitions managed by Jerruh, holds.

Yeah, I don't expect a new QB, either. If he didn't pick Manziel, I don't know why he'd pick a different guy. Espcecially when we're almost guaranteed to be picking later in the round.

If anything, I almost think the later we get in Romo's career, the more Jerry's going to grasp for immediate help and forego the bigger picture. Again, especially if we make the playoffs, which we're almost guaranteed do to.

Sadly, I think Romo will have to be done before we do anything about a new QB.

I just get the feeling that the time is upon us. They've witnessed just how much the offense falls off when Romo is out and how exposed the defense becomes. The fact that we almost pulled the trigger on Money Manziel makes me think this year is possible. Of course, where we will be drafting means we are at the mercy of the draft but if a QB falls, I could see it happening.

Also, if Garrett's here (kill me now) I could see Sean Mannion (also kill me now)in the 2nd round. John Garrett is Oregon State's OC and QB coach so I can see the illusion that Jason and Jerry have it on good authority that Mannion is a stud (puke).

Some other guys to consider:
Mariotta and Connor Cook should go well before we draft.
I hope we stay clear of Jameis Winston. Too many red flags and horrible work ethic. No thanks.

Brett Hundley, UCLA - Talk of him slipping to the 2nd round. I think he's a first round talent and it wouldn't hurt for him to sit a year or 2 (or 5 according to Jerry) behind Romo.
Dak Prescott, Mississippi State - He seems to be rising up boards and I like his toughness. I just haven't seen him make a ton of NFL throws yet.

I liked Bryce Petty, Baylor coming into the season but he combines the worst qualities of our 2 QB's now. His progressions are as bad as Weeden's and his back is as bad as Romo's. Pass.

A QB I do like as an early Day 3 guy is East Carolina's Shane Carden. He definitely has some Romo-like magic to his game. He also played some WR at East Carolina. One drawback is he's already 23.

Couldn't agree more on Mannion. Garrett has that connection with Riley, which got his worthless brother a job and probably got us Bruce Read back in the day. Too bad there's no chance Jerry could think, "Experience shows Red doesn't know a good QB from his ass." But he won't.

What do you think of him, Mr Pac12? Is Mannion not any good? I've never seen him.

That's exactly what happened with Troy, so no reason to think Jerruh learned anything from that. I mean, look how it turned out, right? Would up getting Tony.

Can possibly trade up if need be. I just don't see jerruh worrying at all about the QB spot until it's far too late. Might already be too late, really.

Yes, nothing would make me happier than using 2 picks on an insurance guy.

No trading up. Jerra gets raped and Zoners & dbairs tell us what a great trade it was. No thanks.

I hope Garrett's gone. He cannot select and/or develop QBs for shit.

Wrong.

He's a former QB.
He's an Ivy Leaguer.
Guys around the league respect him.
Troy Aikman thinks he should run for President.

^ These are all valid reasons why Jason Garrett is a guru. Sure, there's no actual results or evidence of Garrett doing anything but you just aren't as good a fan as I am.

Always smart to spend a 4th round pick on a QB that got benched his senior year.
