Bill Polian's comments on Spencer and the 4-3

He played OLB in Dallas' 3-4 scheme, but I think he's more of a 4-3 end. He is an outstanding pass-rusher. As I mentioned earlier, I'm normally wary of players having good seasons in contract years, but putting him at OLB doesn't allow him to do what he does best, which is rush upfield. And I see upside for him in a 4-3 scheme.

We just need to fucking cut ties with Spencer.

If they think he can really play the 4-3 DE spot, why do we need to get rid of him? It saves us from having to fill another hole in the draft or free agency.

Polian seems like he should know. As a GM he built teams that had both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses.

I agree with Polian that Spencer seems like a better fit in the 43... and he was probably our best defensive player all year long this past season.

However, with the cap shape we're in and possible expiring contracts in coming years with our younger players like Dez, Lee, and Carter.. I think we may have to make a sacrifice and let Spencer walk.

I do feel, if it were possible to keep him, our 43 ends would be better than Freeney and Mathis when they were in their prime with Indy.

If they have the right guys at DT and the above is true, we'd probably be on the right road to having a much improved defense.

Spencer did play a down DE spot at Purdue IIRC, and Ware did in college as well.

I hate players that cruise until contract year.

This guy will disappear next season wherever he ends up.

Hatcher and Ratliff at DT.. Looks like a solid line to me.

With Lee, Carter, and whoever at Sam behind them... I wouldn't mind that front 7 at all in the 43.

I dont think he cruised. He was a good player but when you play a OLB spot in the 3-4 and dont get to rush the passer much, you get what we saw from Spencer most of his time here. He's always been good vs the run and plays pretty well in space, but we didnt utilize him enough as a pass rusher other than the 2nd half of the 2009 season (when he was dominant)

If Kiffin and Mrinelli believe Spencer can be a pretty good LDE in the 4-3, then its probably a smart move to keep him, rather than have to replace him.

He plays opposite of a HOF legend. He should have been more consistently productive for years.

Contract year issue and age is a major concern in signing this guy long term.

Realistically tho, how much money would he really be asking for here? A lot of us are just assuming he's looking to make bank.. but really, what is the market for him?

I'm not sure he's gonna get what a lot of us are assuming he will from any team.

I think Crawford will be a good fit for the scheme too. Hatcher I like in this defense and if Ratliff is healthy, there's no question he is a good fit. (Assuming he is here)

Love Lee and Carter at the two most important LB spots for this scheme. Like Carr and Caliborne alot at CB.

The better question should be: how much do you pay a guy who's about to pull a Ken Hamlin on you?

lol ehh...

Would it be safe to assume if we resign Spencer that Crawford is moved down to DT with Hatcher and then Ratliff becomes a cap casualty?

I haven't been a big supporter of Spencer but the only way we keep him is if it's cheep. He said he wants to stay in Dallas so if that's the case money shouldn't be an issue.

I won't be heart broken if he leaves though.
