Jason Witten not medically cleared to play yet

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys’ hope is that Jason Witten will be able to practice at some point over the next week to possibly play as he returns from a spleen injury, but he will need to be cleared medically before he can play Wednesday against the New York Giants.

“Ultimately it’s a medical decision and we’re going to go off what the doctor says," coach Jason Garrett said. "I’m going to follow it as the head coach of the team. Jason’s going to follow it as a player on the team. He certainly has a say in it. He’s a unique guy. There’s been a lot of times in his career where you say, ‘Wow, he probably can’t play this week' -- and sure enough, he plays a full game, 70 plays on offense and involved in the kicking game.

"He’s a unique guy. There are a handful of those guys around the league. They tend to come back from injuries quicker than everybody else, but ultimately this is a medical decision and we’ll follow the doctor’s lead.

Witten suffered the lacerated spleen Aug. 13 at Oakland and was told to keep still and idle for a week to 10 days. Over the last week he has increased his on-field work, catching passes and running routes. He had a scan of his spleen Tuesday, which Garrett said showed the injury was healing.

“We’ll take his situation day by day and see how he responds to the different work he’ll be doing up to the ballgame,” Garrett said.

Witten is remarkably tough and it is good of Garrett to acknowledge it.

To me it sounds like Garrett is saying that Witten will play if Witten thinks he's up for it.

Anybody else?

I think he'll play.

Odds are the team can create another flak jacket like Romo had against the 49'ers, for added protection.

But yeah, I'll be suprised if he's not out there.

If they believe in the line and believe the tackles could hold up I wouldn't rush him back.

These first two games are going to feel like playoff games atmosphere wise.....I don't want witten to end up lost for the season.

I have no idea how u keep him from playing though, can. Imagine him on the sideline while Bennett is out there catching balls for the giants?

Well no harm in letting him fly to New York and dressing up, and then let him decide if he is ready.

Jones just said they are giving serious consideration to holding him out till Seattle.

Thats probably why we are looking at the veteran TE now

That's assuming Bennett catches anything but a cold...

But yeah, I agree with the consensus. Unless they take his helmet away and duct tape his hands behind him, I'm betting on him playing.
