So Houston is giving them Brock and a 2nd for only a 4th rounder just to get rid of Brock?

Browns trade for Brock Osweiler, freeing up the Texans to chase Tony Romo - CBSSports.com

In a stunning deal right before the 2017 NFL league year opened, the Cleveland Browns traded for Brock Osweiler -- yes, FOR him -- securing a second-round pick and the lanky quarterback from the Houston Texans in a deal that is more or less a salary dump, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports.

The news was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, who says the full trade involves the Browns landing Osweiler, a 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2017 fourth-round pick.

The deal frees up the Texans to pursue Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. With Osweiler’s deal off the books, saving Houston $10 million in cap space, the Texans have ample room on their cap to land Romo, and can give the Cowboys something in return (obviously not a second-round pick) to get him.

Such a deal would immediately make the Texans the favorites to win the AFC South.
Houston appeared willing to stand pat at the quarterback position and hope to try and sign Romo as a free agent once he was released by the Cowboys.

But late rumors about the Cowboys trying to trade Romo and recoup some value changed that. The Broncos were in hot pursuit of Romo, and if the Texans wanted him, they had to move fast.

A deal for Osweiler opens up their pocketbooks and allows them to make a push for Romo.

Osweiler was an abject disaster in 2016 for the Texans, inking a huge deal in free agency that ultimate handicapped Houston’s season thanks to his poor play. He was a turnover machine incapable of properly operating the offense, and had very few bright spots.

The Browns, for their part, can start Osweiler. He won’t be good, but he might actually be an upgrade over the position from 2016. It’s believed Cleveland will move on from Robert Griffin III after acquiring Osweiler, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The article I just read stated that there was a good chance that they release Brock

So they essentially just paid $10mil for a back end 2nd round pick

So basically Houston called Dallas late last night, said they could dump Osweiler, so they could get Romo in a trade; now Dallas backpeddles on their release Romo stance. Definitely looks like a move by the Texans to jump in front of Denver and Cleveland in the Romo sweepstakes.

Giants To Sign Rhett Ellison

March 9th, 2017 at 4:19pm CST • By Sam Robinson
Rhett Ellison received interest from the Jaguars and Giants and opted for New York. The tight end signed a four-year deal worth $18MM, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. He will receive $8MM fully guaranteed at signing.

The Jaguars have outbid other suitors for big targets on Thursday but did not secure this mid-tier free agent, with the Giants agreeing to pay Ellison just less than $5MM per year. Both were interested in Ellison for around this price. Ellison, though, hasn’t proven too much in his career to date.

Operating as an auxiliary player in the Vikings’ offense behind Kyle Rudolph, Ellison has just 51 career catches in four seasons. Pro Football Focus graded him better as a blocker than receiver.

Shades of how Jimmy J did things, except for the fact that unlike Jimmy the Browns people have no fucking clue how to use the picks for good players.

That's three 1sts and five 2nds in next two drafts now. 22 picks overall.

Supposedly they are going to try and trade with Pats for Garropolo.

The #Browns draft picks after the Osweiler trade:

2017: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6
2018: 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7

Good blocker. Maybe they will stay the hell away from the good ones in the draft.

Word is the Browns are actually fielding offers for Osweiler. Now that no other team would be on the hook for any guaranteed money teams are starting to show interest. So the Browns will likely be able to add to that list of picks.

Yeah if I were a Browns fan, I'd be excited with all those picks. But don't they have like accountants or something as a GM instead of a real GM? So those picks will likely turn to shit.

Personally, I hope they can do something. Those poor Browns fans deserve it.
