The beginning of the Giant game was awesome though. Romo was calling out every defensive action of the Giants as if he intercepted their defensive call, but if I recall there was some drops and mistakes.

No question he has advanced in his ability to read defenses, its where he has grown the most.

That's one of the reasons some of the plays he had vs Miami and especially Carolina are do disappointing. he is better than that to be making those kinds of decisions.

Gil Lebreton wrote an article questioning the timing of Jerry Jone's criticism of Jason. He suggested that maybe Jerry had someone else in mind.

I say hopefully....

Couldn't help but wonder (but don't give a shit to look it up) if Jon Gruden has any history with Marinelli and Linehan. I'm almost positive he does with Marinelli back in Tampa at least.

But what if, with us playing the Redskins on MNF, with the commentators interviewing players, coaches, probably owners too (knowing Jerry), if during a convo between Jon and Jerry, if Jerry threw a feeler out to Gruden? Would you want to come coach Dallas?

I don't think Jerry can 'afford' to clean house. I mean, you know, he obviously can... but stroking a 25 million dollar check to release Jason and both coordinators (reported cost) is easier said than done. But if he could shit can the clapping robot and bring in a coach who has a history with both coordinators can be done..... Hmmmmm

Maybe he could spark us like he did Tampa Bay in 2001?

Just a thought. And by thought I mean prayer.

Gruden, Marinelli and Bissacia I believe were all on that Tampa staff

I dont think he has any ties to Linehan though.

Yeah, Linehan would probably be out -- totally different offensive system.

But that would be for the better. Always thought Tony would be great in the WCO.

We've heard there's been contact between Jerry and Gruden before, but I have a hard time beliving Gruden would come back to coaching now. He's been asked a lot of times and keeps saying no. I also doubt he'd want to coach in the same division as his brother (unless 'lil danny pulls the plug on his bro after the season)

The only thing that I like about Gruden is it seemed like he took no shit off of Al Davis, Jerry's dad.

It would be about as close to a Bill Parcells hire as you could get, imo.

Yeah, that's a huge plus for him. If you can work with Crazy Al, you can definitely work with Jerry.

I've heard stories from a guy who coached there where Al would literally make changes to pass routes and pass coverages on the practice field right in front of everyone. Not even our idiot owner does that.

But don't worry yim, this all idle talk. I'm sure your boy is totally safe. :)

Anyone watch the A Football Life episode about Bruce Arians?

Makes me sick that there are guys who have devoted their entire lives to coaching, working from the ground up and know that jerri wouldn't hire a guy like this much less be able to identify coaching talent should a miracle happen and he actually decides to value the position

I did watch it and was struck by the idea he somehow managed to go 11-5 with his starting QB Palmer, top wideout and 25 other guys on IR. In that division no less.

Something else that stood out to me about Arians is his experience working with QBs, he took a damn kicker with a good arm while he was coaching in college and won with him.

If he can make good QBs better and bad QBs good, that is incredibly valuable with so few good QBs available these days. Ill be interested to see if he hangs around long enough to develop a QB after Palmer leaves.

I also love his aggressive approach, he'd rather go down swinging vs trying to back into a win via a conservative approach like Garrett. He's my kind off coach, errors are gonna happen whether you're aggressive or conservative, so I'll always prefer errors of aggression because when it works, it has so many ancillary benefits.

This is exactly what I want from a coach.... aggression. Pressure breaks pipes.... but pressure on your opponents and a lot of the time they'll crumble.

Sturm or someone describes Garrett as a risk aversion coach, which is exactly what he is. He tries to do the most conservative, risk averse thing in every situation. Relies almost solely on man beating man. Our head coach is a giant pussy.

Its sickening how ridiculously conservative he is.

but he did get aggressive in that game that didn't matter last year to close the season vs Washington with the unexpected onside kick, way to go out on a limb there chief.

I would think it drives the wildcatter part of jerri nuts

Garrett has this coaching step-by-step list that he's compiled from all the great coaches he's talked to over the years that he simply won't deviate from or change. Because changing it up would require another round of coach interviews.

He definitely strikes me as a student of the game, even a decent student but when you start to compare him to coaches like Arians who started coaching after college on the bottom of the totem pole and moved up to various positions along the way until ultimately hired as a coach, fired as a coach, hired as a coach, fired as a coach, hired as a coach, fired as a coach, hired as a coach, fired as a coach and then hired as an assistant in the NFL, fired as an assistant, hired as an assistant, fired as an assistant, hired as an assistant, fired as an assistant and then ultimately hired as an NFL head coach after earning it the hard way through the fire of actually coaching on every level.

How can Garret possibly compete with a guy like that? He doesn't have the reservoir of experience to draw from so he doesn't stand a chance of competing against his peers when it comes to x's and o's.

He can try to cerebral his way through it, like it appears he does, but that can only take you so far.

When I think of Garrett, I think of the phrase "those than can, do, those that can't teach".

But with jerri at the helm, he gets to "do". Unfortunately, its likely the best they'll get as a head coach as long as jerri is still kicking and my hope was that somehow that might find a way of working but probably not. I can't see a single thing he brings to the table on game day as was made evident during that horrid 7 game losing streak.

Well you knew it wouldn't be long before all hope would be crushed.

Ranch Roundup: Jerry Jones says Cowboys won't tank, but when season ends he'll 'lust' for highest draft pick possible

Ranch Roundup: Jerry Jones says Cowboys won't tank, but when season ends he'll 'lust' for highest draft pick possible

IRVING -- Since everything that happens at Valley Ranch doesn't always make it in the paper or on the Cowboys blog, this is a way to include a few more interesting conversations and notable comments.

Here are 10 Cowboys nuggets from the past week.

1.) Regardless of how the final month of the season plays out, Jason Garrett's job is safe. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has said on multiple occasions that he's been impressed with how the team continues to battle despite the disappointing record. A lot of that credit goes to the head coach.

"I think Jason is a tremendous coach," Jones said Friday afternoon on 105.3 The Fan's Ben and Skin show [KRLD-FM]. "I think he's done a great job with this football team. ... If you watch Jason's football teams, they really play hard for him. We've had some unfortunate breaks in terms of injuries and other things, but Jason, in our mind, is a great football coach and he's going to remain the coach of the Cowboys for many years to come."

2.) Some have suggested that the Cowboys should tank the rest of the way, putting themselves in position for a top five draft pick. Jerry Jones is against that idea. While explaining his thought process Friday morning, the Cowboys owner and general manager used Darren McFadden's late TD run against Washington Mondaynight as an example.

"I will tell you that the day this season is over that I'm going to lust for the highest draft pick that I could have," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan's G-Bag Nation show [KRLD-FM]. "And I'm going to say, 'Well, crap, why did we make that catch?' But I don't say that today and I don't say that Sunday and I won't say it the next week either.

"I'm kind of like McFadden, who knew for sure we were trying to buy time on the clock, then when you get a chance to hit that end zone, get there and make that play. And that's real hard to take out of the mentality of what we're doing, so there's no way that I would line up in a football game - I've never done it, we've never done it in the 26 years that I've been with the Cowboys. We'll try everything that we've got to win that ballgame. They just mean too much."

3.) Dez Bryant's knee/ankle/foot injuries continue to improve and it was noticeable to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan Monday night.
"When he caught that curl route in that two-minute drive, the way he caught it and came out of his break and ran to the sideline, I was like, that looked like he had his juice back," Linehan said. "He's certainly getting closer to where he was before he got hurt. I don't know exactly what [percentage] it is, but I know he looks a lot better to me."

4.) Rookie defensive end Randy Gregory has also noticed during practice.
"I'm not going to lie, Dez made one of the best plays I've seen in a while in practice," Gregory said Friday on the Ben and Skin show. "He was running a crossing route and reached out one-handed. In college it would have been a catch, but in the NFL it's not. He didn't get two feet in. But I've never seen someone catch the ball like he did the other day in practice."

5.) Bryant appeared to be upset with quarterback Matt Cassel Monday night after he wasn't targeted on a previous play. At one point, Bryant sat on the bench and took both shoes off. But that had nothing to do with Cassel. Bryant, who fractured a bone in his foot during the season opener, has metal inserts in both cleats for extra protection. The inserts were bothering him and he needed an adjustment.

6.) Sean Lee didn't get to play in last season's playoff game at Lambeau Field. He was still recovering from a torn ACL. But he was at the game, and he talked this week about how it provided motivation.
"It was probably one of the toughest times during my rehab was not being able to play in a big game like that," he said. "At the same point, it was motivating to find a way to get back on this team so you can play in games like that."

7.) Lee played one of his best games Monday night, recording a team-high 13 tackles and a sack. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli recently praised the play of Lee and fellow starting linebacker Rolando McClain.
"[Lee] was terrific," Marinelli said. "I mean, he was terrific. Those two guys at linebacker are really special. We got really two terrific linebackers. Those guys are veterans, tough, they show up, and smart."

8.) Lee received the highest Pro Football Focus grade for the win over Washington. Here's the Cowboys' top 5 grades from that game: Sean Lee (+4.8), Zack Martin (+4.6), Barry Church (+3.6), Tyron Smith (+3.0), DeMarcus Lawrence (+2.0).

9.) Lawrence had a career-high two sacks against the Redskins. The second-year defensive end now has four sacks in his last four games.
"Getting sacks will build confidence, not just for you but as a d-line," Lawrence said. "We've just been doing a good job lately, working together, getting our fits together outside and then just being relentless in our rush. It helped me out a lot these last four weeks. Hopefully more will just keep [coming]."

10.) Packers QB Aaron Rodgers provided a lengthy breakdown of the Cowboys defense during his conference call with reporters at Valley Ranch this week.
"I think it's a very good defense," he said. "They play really well together. Coach Marinelli is a fantastic coach and he's always got his guys playing well and sound and disciplined, and it's a lot of really good players who play well together. Obviously the big names have been playing well for a long time, but you've got some young guys who are stepping in and playing some good time for them.
"You've got Lawrence making some plays and obviously Greg Hardy is a very talented pass rusher. [Tyrone] Crawford and [Nick] Hayden are talented guys inside. Rolando has come back and had another solid season for them, and the back end is doing a good job.
"I think Barry Church has really continued to improve every year he's been in the league. They've got a couple guys outside that can really cover, and then you've got the young guy [Byron] Jones who has stepped in and done some good things for them. It's a very talented, sound defense that has done a good job of limiting the opponent's points per game."
