In high school, one of my history teachers absolutely adored FDR and despised Reagan. She once laughed when a student remarked how "unfortunate" it was that John Hinckley hadn't been successful.

It wasn't that I didn't have Republican teachers. It's that the Democrats were more vocal. That's probably because Progressives are intrinsically more activist.

Well thanks for proving my point. Only a dummy would not want to teach that, at least as a theory

"theory" and "fact" are two different things

I didnt have one teacher who really thought it was a "theory"

We don't need another discussion about the respective meanings of fact and theory as they pertain to science.

I don't think the fourth grader actually gave up any rights here.

I don't think the fourth grader understood what the teacher wanted him/her to do.

Well it'd better be good, and include sketchy characters, loose women and unsympathetic police officers.

Exactly right.

The most telling statement came from Daddy himself.
dad found a note in his fourth-grade son's backpack
suggesting that his teacher instructed students to write letters on their willingness to give up their constitutional rights.

The article didn't say this was the assignment. The father did suggest that it was the assignment but we don't know.

I do agree that a teacher shouldn't try to indoctrinate their students one way or the other. The fact is we don't know that happened here.

Here's the lyrics to this gem:

Song 1:
Mm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said that all must lend a hand
To make this country strong again
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said we must be fair today
Equal work means equal pay
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said that we must take a stand
To make sure everyone gets a chance
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

He said red, yellow, black or white
All are equal in his sight
Mmm, mmm, mm!
Barack Hussein Obama

Yes!
Mmm, mmm, mm
Barack Hussein Obama

Song 2:
Hello, Mr. President we honor you today!
For all your great accomplishments, we all doth say "hooray!"

Hooray, Mr. President! You're number one!
The first black American to lead this great nation!

Hooray, Mr. President we honor your great plans
To make this country's economy number one again!

Hooray Mr. President, we're really proud of you!
And we stand for all Americans under the great Red, White, and Blue!

So continue ---- Mr. President we know you'll do the trick
So here's a hearty hip-hooray ----

Hip, hip hooray!
Hip, hip hooray!
Hip, hip hooray!

Agree or disagree with the policies, both sides do it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/education/13texas.html?_r=0

The standards, reviewed every decade, serve as a template for textbook publishers, who must come before the board next year with drafts of their books. The board’s makeup will have changed by then because Dr. McLeroy lost in a primary this month to a more moderate Republican, and two others — one Democrat and one conservative Republican — announced they were not seeking re-election.

There are seven members of the conservative bloc on the board, but they are often joined by one of the other three Republicans on crucial votes. There were no historians, sociologists or economists consulted at the meetings, though some members of the conservative bloc held themselves out as experts on certain topics.

In economics, the revisions add Milton Friedman and Friedrich von Hayek, two champions of free-market economic theory, among the usual list of economists to be studied, like Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes. They also replaced the word “capitalism” throughout their texts with the “free-enterprise system.”

“Let’s face it, capitalism does have a negative connotation,” said one conservative member, Terri Leo. “You know, ‘capitalist pig!’ ”

Cynthia Dunbar, a lawyer from Richmond who is a strict constitutionalist and thinks the nation was founded on Christian beliefs, managed to cut Thomas Jefferson from a list of figures whose writings inspired revolutions in the late 18th century and 19th century, replacing him with St. Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin and William Blackstone. (Jefferson is not well liked among conservatives on the board because he coined the term “separation between church and state.”)

“The Enlightenment was not the only philosophy on which these revolutions were based,” Ms. Dunbar said.

Milton Friedman and Friedrich von Hayek should absolutely be included in economics coursework. It's a travesty they weren't. They're both Nobel Prize winners, and they're two of the most influential economic minds of the past century.

The stuff about Jefferson isn't completely accurate. He was being cut from a World History course, but he still featured prominently in American history courses.

That's decidedly creepy in and of itself, but how much was the school actually involved? In the time it took them to learn that song, I could've taught them all about Milton Friedman. :p

*if* the teacher told him this, a *teacher* told him to lay down and take it up the ass.

what is the mindset we want children to grow up into? let the government decide things...

or let us.

there is no in between.
