OXNARD,Calif.– One week into training camp, Cowboys receivers coach Jimmy Robinson handicapped the race for the No. 3 job behind starters Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.
The way Robinson sees it now, Kevin Ogletree has a slight lead. He then mentioned four other receivers in this order: Dwayne Harris, Andre Holmes, Tim Benford and Cole Beasley.
“It could be anybody,” Robinson said. “It’s a long way from being over.”
The third receiver job is one of the featured position battles of training camp. Much will be decided during the Cowboys’ preseason games. Also, the three receivers who make the final roster behind Bryant and Austin will also be based on how they help the Cowboys on special teams.
Beasley had his best day Monday – one day after the SMU product returned to training camp following his surprising exit Friday – with three good catches, including one for a touchdown.
Holmes failed his conditioning test to start training camp and since his return has struggled catching the football. Ogletree dropped a slant route Monday and McKinney North product Raymond Radway also had a drop Monday after coming on of late.
“It’s a work in progress for all of them,” Robinson said. “They’re doing good things but they’re just not doing good things all the time.”
Harris started fast but has struggled over the last two days. He’s had some drops and quarterback Tony Romo yelled at him during Monday’s team drills after he apparently messed up on a route.
Benford, the undrafted free agent out of Tennessee Tech, has consistently caught the football but needs to make more impact plays. Fifth-round pick Danny Coale out of Virginia Tech hasn’t practiced yet while recovering from a broken left foot, but he’s expected back Thursday.
Robinson said he wants all the young receivers to show more consistency.
“They’re inconsistent and that’s the thing I’m trying to get away from,” Robinson said. “We want guys out here doing things right all the time and not some of the time
