Cowboys WRs coach Jimmy Robinson: Kevin Ogletree has lead for No. 3 spot, but is SMU product Cole Beasley in the mix?

OXNARD,Calif.– One week into training camp, Cowboys receivers coach Jimmy Robinson handicapped the race for the No. 3 job behind starters Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

The way Robinson sees it now, Kevin Ogletree has a slight lead. He then mentioned four other receivers in this order: Dwayne Harris, Andre Holmes, Tim Benford and Cole Beasley.

“It could be anybody,” Robinson said. “It’s a long way from being over.”

The third receiver job is one of the featured position battles of training camp. Much will be decided during the Cowboys’ preseason games. Also, the three receivers who make the final roster behind Bryant and Austin will also be based on how they help the Cowboys on special teams.

Beasley had his best day Monday – one day after the SMU product returned to training camp following his surprising exit Friday – with three good catches, including one for a touchdown.

Holmes failed his conditioning test to start training camp and since his return has struggled catching the football. Ogletree dropped a slant route Monday and McKinney North product Raymond Radway also had a drop Monday after coming on of late.

“It’s a work in progress for all of them,” Robinson said. “They’re doing good things but they’re just not doing good things all the time.”

Harris started fast but has struggled over the last two days. He’s had some drops and quarterback Tony Romo yelled at him during Monday’s team drills after he apparently messed up on a route.

Benford, the undrafted free agent out of Tennessee Tech, has consistently caught the football but needs to make more impact plays. Fifth-round pick Danny Coale out of Virginia Tech hasn’t practiced yet while recovering from a broken left foot, but he’s expected back Thursday.

Robinson said he wants all the young receivers to show more consistency.

“They’re inconsistent and that’s the thing I’m trying to get away from,” Robinson said. “We want guys out here doing things right all the time and not some of the time

I have a feeling at least one of the guys we release will go on to have a long, productive career, and people will bitch about us letting him go.

That only works if you were championing that guy while he was here. For example, you'd have every right to scream if Harris went somewhere and blew up. Theebs can complain if his white hero Beasley blows up. I can't bitch about anyone because I hate almost all of our current 3rd WR options.

get it right, I am pulling for harris to make the team and be a good player here.

I am hoping holmes/radway/coale work out also....all seem to be good kids who love football.

Ogletree only makes the team if a vet WR ISN'T in the plans, IMO.

It wouldn't make sense to carry him again at the expense of a younger player with upside.

What? No Danny Coale?

But according to Theebs:

Listen to the coaches talk about him[Danny Coale]. They like him and he is current pick.

He isn't going anywhere.

he isnt laz. he hasnt been on the practice field yet, robinson was talking about the guys who were out there.

Wait until after the third preseason game I imagine coale will be in good shape and contributing. I dont think they cut him unless they get there hands on a really good vet and think he can clear to the ps.

Beasley has a lot working against him:

1.) The Cowboys are prejudiced against small receivers.
2.) The Cowboys have some weird fetish with Kevin Ogletree.
3.) They say the 3rd and after WRs have to contribute on special teams, but it looks like Dez will be the primary punt returner which looks to be Beasley's only forte on special teams. I don't think he has much to be a Steve Tasker on kick and punt coverage despite being around the same size.

So while it's been a nice, little run for him, no pun intended, I'm pretty much writing him off the roster at this point. Unless he absolutely stuns as a Wr in preseason.
