If Jason Garrett's game plan for San Francisco doesn't go better than his news conference to address Dez Bryant, the Cowboys will lose.

And lose big.

Garrett's daily media briefings can be robotic and non-responsive. He purposely sheds as little light on his team and his thinking as possible. That's fine. But how he handled Bryant's absence earlier this week was his worst public showing since he took over as head coach nearly six years ago.

Garrett said he wasn't there to excuse Bryant's behavior then took great pains to do just that in virtually every response. He called Bryant's actions well-intended, a preposterous leap in logic that will come back to bite the head coach in future dealings with Bryant or other players. He went to the organization's safe word in discussing Bryant and his actions -- passion -- to avoid more pointed criticism.

What took place earlier this week had nothing to do with passion. Garrett along with everyone else knows it. This was a profound lapse of judgment. It was unprofessional and created an issue where none should have existed.

It also goes against one of Garrett's core principles, the need for every player to be accountable to himself and his teammates. This is why Garrett tied himself into a semantical knot as the news conference unfolded.

There's no way Garrett believes everything he said Thursday. But he weighed the options and considered it was better to come across as a hypocrite or a Dez apologist than it was to risk losing his ability to reach the Pro Bowl receiver. Garrett doesn't care if he comes across as weak to the fans as long as he's not perceived as weak behind the scenes.

Call it an occupational hazard.

The public objective of that ill-fated news conference was to protect Bryant as much as possible and still project that Garrett was in charge. The head coach failed at both. If this comes across as too harsh, well, there's only one thing to say:

It's well-intended.

Call it an occupational hazard..

Everyone knows Jerry is the alpha and omega but that is still a sad state of affairs if that is his mentality.

If the fans see it the players eat it up with a spoon. There is no chain of command with this organization. Only one door and one misguided dellusional voice who doesn't understand the meaning of accountability either.

I would say Garrett had no other option. He's already positioned himself as the players' buddy, and he can't exactly change his stripes now and become some tough guy. If he did he'd just look like even more of a phony than he already does and the players would just roll their eyes.

He thought he'd just grin at the media and be a smooth talker like usual, and people would buy it. For some reason this time, the media saw through it. I guess they really were mad at him for giving the Dez info to the SF media first.

If there was ever a time for Garrett to grow some balls and change his stripes it would be after last seasons 4-12 record! That was the perfect time to "become a hardass" because the shitty record gave him the perfect excuse, reason and opportunity to do so.

The players would have respected it. The fans would have respected it. But instead he looses face by not becoming tougher on his players and holding them accountable.

He had the opportunity as a coach to take a step forward, instead he takes five steps backwards by waving his vagina in the air and providing them a "safe place" like he just did with Dez instead of showing some balls and smacking these little bitches around and acting like a real coach and garnering their respect

Dez Bryant has missed or been late 7-8 times this year
12:48 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

Despite the Dallas Cowboys and his representatives at Roc Nation working with him, Dez Bryant continues to demonstrate a pattern of irresponsible behavior by being late to or missing medical treatments and team meetings, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The wide receiver has shown improvement at times, but he has still been tardy or AWOL at least 20 times and possible as many as 40 times during his seven-year Dallas career.

Jason Garrett said Dez Bryant missed treatment, an MRI appointment and meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday because he was fearful about bad news concerning his leg injury. Said Garrett: "He's an emotional person and he didn't handle it the right way." AP
One anonymous Cowboys player said: "If you were hoping for him to come to a scheduled meeting, he may or may not be there; but if you need a first down on third and 14, throw it to Dez."

After hurting his knee in the Cowboys' win over the Chicago Bears a week ago, Bryant missed treatment and an MRI appointment on Monday, plus team meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday after not communicating with the team. He later expressed regret.

"Things could've been done a lot different," Bryant said. "I could've done a way better job on my part. It was more so on really not wanting to see what was going on with my injury. Luckily, it was way better than what I thought and everything is good. And I'm just ready to get back on that field whenever that time is."

Bryant has hired a driver to improve his attendance, but one source told Schefter that Bryant has been late or missed treatment on a foot injury that dates back to last season "at least seven or eight times this year alone."

While Bryant tries to change, one source expressed concern that the Cowboys are enabling bad behavior by fining the wideout instead of meting out more harsh discipline.

Another source expressed concern over how Bryant's decisions could affect his career longevity -- the person thinks that Bryant's lack of sleep and poor eating habits will prevent him from extending his career as long as he could.

Is this really worth a new cycle? Dude was scared to find out he might miss game time. Finally bit the bullet and went. Everyone's had that injury they didn't want to get a confirmation on. Not really sure why the fuck this is news worthy at all.

The story has way more to do with the Red Gelding and how he handled it.

Because he's a veteran player. One of the highest paid players. Supposed to be a leader.

Because he's supposed to be a professional and show up for work.

Because delaying diagnosis could result in a longer recovery time.

Because the coaches not knowing his availability makes it harder for them to install an offense for the upcoming week.

Because it shows a blatant disregard for authority. Shows that he knows he's untouchable. Shows he has zero respect for his head coach.

And because it further exposes Jason Garrett as a complete fraud for his constant calls for accountability, right kind of guys, etc... for him to lie/cover for the player and then mask this act as displaced passion.

But hey... GO COWBOYS!!
