Wade Phillips will get the young players in

SAN ANTONIO -- With the preseason opener coming Sunday, coach Wade Phillips hasn't made any final decisions regarding who plays for how long against the Bengals.

One thing is certain: quarterback Tony Romo will start against Cincinnati. As far as anybody else is concerned, Phillips said the coaching staff is still determining.

But the younger players on the team who are fighting for roster spots will see plenty of action.

"We’ll play them a lot, that’s a factor," Phillips said. "We really have two games to get ready for and I would like to play a certain set of the younger guys more in one game and the other set more with special teams in that game and then vice versa."

*On the injury front, second-round pick linebacker Sean Lee (strained quad) could practice this week and if so, he might play Sunday. Fourth-round piack Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (shoulder) is scheduled to start practice Wednesday. He has not participated in OTAs or minicamps so it appears doubtful he will play Sunday. But on Aug. 12, Owusu-Ansah might play against Oakland in a limited basis.

*Over the next couple of days the Cowboys will install the second part of their short-yardage and red-zone packages. Monday was the offense's turn and Tuesday will be the defense. Also, expect to see quarterback Stephen McGee get plenty of snaps in the preseason opener and the second game against Oakland.

"We will try to work that all out," Phillips said. "We want to give guys that we think are practicing well an opportunity to show that they can compete and help the team or make the team or whatever it is.”

*Phillips wanted to make sure that nobody forgot this is training camp and he will continue to breakdown his players mentally and physically and then build them back up. The last two practices were almost at 75-80 percent speed but expect that to pick up the next few days just before the preseason opener.
