I like that we're being proactive and adding outsiders as opposed to sitting on who we got.

The Dallas Cowboys acquired versatile offensive lineman Ryan Cook from the Miami Dolphins on Thursday, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.

Compensation to the Dolphins isn't yet known.

The Cowboys got an up-close look at Cook on Wednesday night, when they played the Dolphins in their preseason finale. Cook started for Miami, along with the rest of the reserve offensive line.

The Cowboys have struggled with depth on their interior offensive line all preseason, and the unit has been leaky since the beginning of training camp. Dallas signed free agents Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau during the offseason to solidify the inside of its offensive line, but both players have battled injuries in the preseason. Center Phil Costa also has been limited with a back injury.

Cook, a 2006 second-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings, is 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds. He played for the Vikings from 2006 to 2010 before landing with the Dolphins last season.

Cook has started 40 games in his NFL career, playing center, guard and tackle. He appeared in seven games with no starts last season.

"Holy crap, I thought we were going to be o.k., but it turns out that our guys really do suck. We've gotta do something. The season starts in 5 minutes."

Is that proactive or reactive?

Either way, it is good to add a new player who is likely better than the guy he is replacing.

Yeah, when you look at it like that, it's not really being proactive at all.

Still... good to address a need even if it is late in the game.

That's not really fair. We brought in two free agents. Yeah, they weren't a Nicks type, but we tried to get help there.

Then we had all the injuries. When rosters are at 90, it's not really a good time to be looking for help on the streets. Still, we brought in Dockery, Holland, etc. to see if they would provide any help. All of us assumed that we would be looking for more help when roster cuts were made, and here it is.

You could probably take issue with the way they tried to fix the OL in the offseason, but since camp has started, I would call them proactive.

Jerry Jones says Cowboys acquired Ryan Cook for offensive line depth but hopes 'you see him in a lot of games'

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team traded for Ryan Cook to boost the depth in the offensive line, but then again, “Hopefully, you see him in a lot of games this year.”
The Cowboys have not announced the trade, but it is believed they are sending a seventh-round pick to Miami for the seventh-year veteran.

“He’s been a starter. He’s got some length about him. He’s about 6-5, has some good, long arms, and all of that is a positive for him,” Jones said Friday on his radio show on KRLD 105.3 FM The Fan. “He plays center and can play guard and has played both. That’s a good positive for him.”

Cook, 29, was a second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. He started three games at center as a rookie and started 30 games over the next two years at left tackle. He moved to guard after that, but started only seven games.

The Dolphins acquired him on waivers in 2011, and he appeared in six games.

“We saw him the other night play, get some snaps,” Jones said. “We knew that there was a possibility here. We really evaluated him during the ballgame.”

Jones said the Cowboys had to shore up the offensive line depth because second-year guard Kevin Kowalski (ankle) is not close to a return. Also, the team waived second-year guard Bill Nagy, who had ankle surgery.

“This, really, in my mind, is done and was done for our depth,” Jones said. “Plus, he’s very capable because he’s started in several games in the NFL. He is very capable of competing. Hopefully, you’ll see him in a lot of games this year.”

So he hopes the starter gets hurt...

just idiotic the stuff he says.

I really wish he would stop all the interviews.

btw broaddus just pointed out that cook was a vested veteran who if cut did not have to clear waivers and could sign with anyone he wanted, so that is why Dallas traded the pick to guarantee he would be here.

maybe he means Cook will compete with someone here for a starting spot, although I really doubt it

A good positive. Great!

That's got to be better than a bad positive or a good negative.

Maybe Cook intentionally looked like shit to get traded to the Cowboys? It could happen. It could happen.

He did have another series in the second half. His guy blew by him on the play where Moore ran for his life.

by all accounts I've read last night and today, he was having a very good camp

also, the stories written on him say he only played the first series of our game the other night and then was done

If he had a good camp why was he going to get cut by one of the worst teams in the NFL? He did come back into the game in the second half. He was the center for the first series, then they took him out again. I have DVR and i do use it. Believe that.

Good point. Clearly reactive to what they have seen in preseason

Dockery and holland don't count as bringing in guys. We have had them before and know exactly what they bring, which is little.

I like the addition though. Anything is better than going with the same old retreads like we have done in the past

Per broaddus

Here is my scouting report on Ryan Cook, who was acquired via trade from the Dolphins late Thursday night. I studied games in the 2012 preseason against Atlanta, Carolina, Tampa Bay and Dallas.*

Was drafted in the league as a tackle by the Vikings, has since moved inside to see time at both center and guard. Observed him as a center in the Dallas, Tampa Bay and Carolina games. Played right guard against the Falcons.
Made the line calls as a center, aware of responsibilities when uncovered. Showed the ability to help across the pocket. Plays with some upper body strength, can hold his man along the line in pass protection.
Little overextended and wide base at times but you didn’t see him get jerked out of his stance. Was able to get outside on the screen packages.
Decent initial quickness out of his stance as a guard. Can make the reach or cut off block when asked. Several times where he did a nice job of getting his head across his man staying on his feet and working for a finish.
Was impressed with his effort to finish blocks. Didn’t see him flopping around on the ground when doing his job. Played in position and showed some balance for the most part, only got a little out of whack on an inside twist stunt against Dallas but was fine on the same move against Tampa.
Veteran player that gives you some position flexibility at two spots. Plays with a little power inside.

Yeah I don't think the Dolphins have a wealth of studs on their oline to the point where they can just cut solid players.

Jerry is blowing smoke up yall's asses, and once again, the homers just drink all the kool-aid in. We've been patching holes in the oline for 3 straight seasons now. Makes me wonder if Ginger is even dumber than I thought previously.
