Timeline of Jerrys' unwillingness to appropriately fix his OL over the last 5 years

Note from the editor: This is nothing new. I’ve posted this information in the past, but it was a part of another post. Since I have a feeling I’m going to be referencing the Cowboys’ recent history of ignoring their offensive line quite a bit as we lead up to the draft, I figured I’d give the following timeline its own post.

2008-2009

With an aging OL in place, the Cowboys had a total of 18 draft picks in 2008 and 2009. With those 18 picks, they selected one offensive lineman, Robert Brewster. Brewster is no longer with the team.

2010

In 2010, the Cowboys drafted one offensive lineman, Sam Young, in the 6th round. Young, like Brewster, is no longer with the team. They headed into the 2010 season with the oldest offensive line in the NFL. Leonard Davis celebrated his 32nd birthday just before the start of the season, with Marc Colombo and Kyle Kosier celebrating their 32nd birthdays shortly thereafter. Andre Gurode was 31. The one player that was still relatively young was the 26 year old Doug Free, who was taking over at LT for the departed Flozell Adams, who was 35.

The Cowboys were the overwhelming favorites to win the NFC East that season, but in what should have been a fairly predictable outcome, the offensive line went into a sharp decline and the the offense sputtered. It didn’t help that the defense was surprisingly bad. They finished that season 6-10.

2011

The following offseason, Jerry Jones made the obvious decision to cut bait with Colombo, Davis and Gurode, three players that were playing poorly and making far too much money. The Cowboys were, in a way, forced into “going young” along their OL. For the first time in 20+ years as the Cowboys’ GM, Jones spent a first round pick on an offensive lineman, scoring the extremely talented Tyron Smith out of USC. They would take a couple more offensive linemen in the 4th and 7th rounds, grabbing David Arkin and Bill Nagy, respectively. They also locked up Free to a long term deal, paying him $32 million over 4 years. It appeared that after years of ignoring the OL, it was finally becoming a priority, albeit way too late.

To begin the season, the Cowboys started two rookies: Nagy at LG, and Tyron Smith at RT. They also plugged in 2nd year player Phil Costa at center. Kosier was moved from LG over to the right side to be sort of an “offensive tackle whisperer” for Smith. In one offseason, they went from the oldest offensive line in the league to one of the youngest.

With so many new and unproven players inserted into the lineup, the Cowboys’ offensive line once again sputtered all season, this time even more predictably than in 2010. Smith had a great rookie year, but the two other new pieces, Costa and Nagy, both had brutal seasons. Costa’s poor play lasted 16 games, while Nagy’s bad season was cut short in Week 6, when he was lost for the season with a broken ankle. Kosier’s decline and health issues continued. Free, meanwhile, was a major disappointment, having a surprisingly bad season. The Cowboys were learning that turning over a full offensive line in a short amount of time isn’t exactly easy. They hit with one player, missed with two, and were heading into the 2012 once again needing to scramble to find answers.

2012

The Cowboys’ plan of attack for the OL in 2012, as usual, puzzled me. First, they signed OG Mackenzy Bernadeau, a player that had a couple bad seasons in 2009 and 2010 in Carolina, who then lost his job in 2011. The Cowboys then went out and signed 30 year old Nate Livings, a player that Bengals fans by and large were more than happy to see leave. With Livings and Bernadeau in place, the team felt comfortable cutting Kosier. On the outside, the Cowboys flip-flopped Smith and Free, with Smith moving from RT to LT, and vice versa. No offensive linemen were drafted.

Heading into 2012, the Cowboys had an almost complete lack of continuity along their OL:

Cowboys-OL-continuity.png

Costa was lost for the season early on, Livings played better than expected, Mackenzy Bernadeau did play well, and Doug Free’s contract now looks like a horrible mistake, as he was bad for the second straight year.

The team still has next to no depth along the OL, and one of the worst C-RG-RT combos in all of football.

Sigh...How is it dummies like us are able to recognize some of the serious flaws with the management of the team and yet the "Pro's" in the front office at Valley Ranch can't seem to figure it out?

I'm thinking Old Man Houck had just lost it. I know Jerry relies on him heavily, probably more than anyone for OL advice. Either he thought the guys he had were better than they were or he couldn't recognize good young players anymore, or both.

Remember when coachscout posted on CZ that at least once in every game Bill Nagy had a "wow" play that really impressed our coaching staff?

Jerry said so...........

Romo is so nimble and athletic that he can run away from danger.

Hence offensive line not such a priority in his delusional thought process.

Our biggest issue remains that our chief talent evaluator and his army of yes-men, has-been's, and "special" family members can not truly evaluate the overall talent of our roster and it's weaknesses. Awful offensive line and safety play are exhibits A and B but there are many more. The overall strategy of middle round projects is Jerry desperately trying to find another Erik Williams or larry Allen. The evaluation of the Safeties was so bad we actually extended Gerald Sensabaugh.

The bottom 20 of our roster is horrible. Jacksonville and Oakland level bad. It was so bad that last year, when injures hit, the scrubs on the 2-deep couldn't handle the job and we signed 7 or 8 guys off the street in the middle of the season. Translation: guys no one else wanted by teams who also had to deal with injuries. Blowing the entire 2009 draft and constant poor gambles in the 4th and 5th rounds have left us with a ton of UDFA's as our main depth. Not UDFA's who did their time, getting coached up for years like Romo or Austin. I'm talking no-talent scrubs like Danny McCray who now has more NFL starts than he did in all of college (0 starts). Jerry takes too many gambles in his desperate hopes to appear to be the smartest guy in the NFL. We are a medicore team because of it.

I think Tyron will be a very good player. The tools are there.

But yeah, we're attrocious when it comes to drafting lineman.

Which is partly why I'm all for us drafting Cooper/Warmack at 18.

Sure... this is a deep G draft, but if there's one guy ---- ONE GUY in this deep G draft who'll suck, we'll find him in the later rounds.

No thanks. Give me the cant miss.

Would you rather:

Draft Kenny Vacarro in the 1st and hope like hell for Larry Warford, Kyle Long, Barrett Jones, Travis Frederick, etc. in the 2nd OR
Draft DJ Fluker in the 1st and hope like like hell for Matt Elam, Johnathan Cyprien, Eric Reid, etc in the 2nd ?

Correct answer: Jerry doesn't care what you want. He will take Terron Armstead in the 1st (duh? small school and it's in Arkansas) and a WR in the 2nd. And you will like it. #Wheeler'n'dealer

As CMD said it would be a completely different ball game concerning the OL if the team focused more on the higher profile players coming out of the draft instead of Jerry trying to look smart by drafting some diamond in the rough from a Pogey Tech college.

When all else fails he has his fall back plan of over valuing cast offs from other teams.

Jerry could be wrong 99 times out 100 when trying to find that hidden gem / special player in his eyes come draft day. As long as he has that one player to look smug about and thump his chest he doesn't see those other 99 as collateral damage to his team.

honestly I want the safety.

I sincerely doubt we are going to replace the guards this season. I know everyone wants to, I don't think there's any chance we do. I know you're all going to shit on this but I want to believe that we have a plan along the OL and last year was just phase 1. If you can get an OL full of servicable starters who fit your scheme AND you can get continuity there with guys who stay healthy, you can have a very good line with minimal resources invested. Last year was bad but we literally changed the entire line, we should have expected that. If we evaluated right, and got the pieces we really wanted, I want to believe that with another year under their belt, improved communication, we'll see better results.

IIRC from the guards we saw less of them just straight up getting beat, and more of them making mental mistakes. We'd have six to block six, and Livings would end up doing god knows what leaving a free rusher up the middle. As opposed to Doug Free, who we watched get physically manhandled week in and week out.

So if we go OL in the first it better be a tackle. My two cents.

In the second round too.

I would have cut someone's dick off by now over all these busted OL picks.

As much as I want Jonathan Cooper, I would not trade up for him. We don't have the resources. I would wait and see if he slips to 18. If he's there, and no one else amazing has somehow slipped to us, I take him and tell Bernadeau and Costa they are competing for the starting Center job. You want better O Line play? Bring in actual talent and make them compete. No more next guy up mentality. Next guy up is fine if he actually earns the job. Bernadeau and Costa will raise the level of their game (if that's even in them) if they know the other guy is hungry for his job.

If Cooper is not there, I look at Vacarro or top-rated DL. Personally, I'm not sold on Vacarro that high, but plenty of people seem to think he merits it. We need a realsitic replacement for Spencer since we appear to be renting him for 1 year again. Our DT's are older or try-hard guys, so we could use a talented DT who can be disruptive. I feel good about the depth in the 18 to 45 range. I just don't feel good about Jerry's thought process.

I agree with a lot of this. We need to shore up the deep secondary and JJ appears to believe he has fixed the OLine with his acquisitions last year. I can see how JJ and company would rationalize a safety with the first pick. However, I still wonder how much more effective Romo could be with a little more time and a consistent run game. I do not think we will ever have a Ravens/85 Bears type of defense no matter how hard we try. I think our best chance to win now is to create a dynamic offense.

Columbo and Davis were obvious cuts. It was clearly time for both to leave.

I still don't get the decision to cut Gurode without having a viable replacement on the roster (or finding one afterwards). Gurode may have been underperforming his contract, but Jerry totally whiffed on replacing Gurode. It was simple stupidity on Jerry's part.

and thus began the ridiculous adoration of Phil Costa.

uhhh, the team was so high on Costa that they cut Gurode. Therefore, he is good. Plus, Ratliff thinks he's tough.
