The trend of backups better than the starters

We've seen it a couple of times lately. Obviously Harris and Beaslet gives you something Ogletree doesn't. And it looks like Parnells got more balls than Free.

I understand being afraid to pull the trigger if you can't trust a guy like Dunbar to know his assignments or pass block. But there's no explanation for not playing Parnell over Free other than the huge investment they put Into Free.

Fixing the Oline is not as hopeless as people are making it out to be.

1.) CUT FREE. Eat his salary, but cut him. It's one thing to lead the league in penalties as in false starts, but when you are a human turnstyle... can't have it. Flozell Adams always led the elague in false starts, but he could play, and so we didn't mind it much. Free is not like that.

2.) Put Parnell at Free's spot.

3.) Draft Warmack to be LG.

4.) Make Kowalski the Center.

5.) Keep Livings at RG---he's not great but he is serviceable.

6.) Your depth would consist of Cook (G/C), Costa (G/C), Bernadeau (G/C), and then draft a swing tackle.

The offense did better after Austin left with another one of his injuries. We need to cut him too.

I'm on the fence with that. I wouldn't be upset if we cut Austin. I think we'd be just fine with a Bryant, Harris, and Beasly unit. Draft another WR---in the middle rounds, and get Hannah more involved, he's essentially a TE/WR.

Flozell Adams always led the elague in false starts, but he could play, and so we didn't mind it much. Free is not like that. Very likely. Free's cap hit goes from $5.375M this year to $11.175M in 2013. Cutting him would give us an immediate cap hit of $8.35M which would free up about $2.825M in additional cap room for us. Not to mention, if he stays the team has to pay him $7M in actual salary. Cutting him just creates dead money on the cap, no actual money paid out to him.

2.) Put Parnell at Free's spot. Okay Jerry Jones. Let's stop anointing our back-up's.

3.) Draft Warmack to be LG. Right Guard more likely.

4.) Make Kowalski the Center. See #2

5.) Keep Livings at RG---he's not great but he is serviceable. Left Guard. He still sucks, he just sucks less than everyone else right now.

6.) Your depth would consist of Cook (G/C), Costa (G/C), Bernadeau (G/C), and then draft a swing tackle. Paying Bernadeau $2.562M next year as a back-up doesn't seem like a good plan to me. Also, who's drafting this swing tackle?

Austin has disappeared since signing his new contract.

Imagine that

It's all just an idea. You cannot remake the entire Oline in one offseason. The way I propose would seem the least drastic right away. I'm not annoiting anyone, just going with the known playes we have right now.

Austin's cap hit goes from $2.72M to $8.302M next year. That's not even counting the $5M penalty from the NFL for Austin's deal.

I think cutting him would cause a $4.71M hit so that would free up about $3.592M in 2013 cap room. At the same time, it means going out and getting a real receiver. I like some of our back-up's but they would get exposed as fulltime starters.

I want to fix the O Line too. I just want better solutions than Kowalski, Parnell, and a 1st round Guard in a pass-rusher heavy 1st round.

Cut Free, go big in free agency, even if it means signing a Left Tackle and moving Tyron back to RT.

Keep Livings for 1 more year because the cap hit is too big this next year.

Sign Antoine Caldwell from the Texans to play Center. Sign Costa to a 1 year tender (he's a restricted free agent) and see if he can get healthy.

Cut Bernadeau and target Alabama's Barret Jones or UNC's Jonathan Cooper in a trade up into the bottom of the 1st or high 2nd round.

Get an offensive coordinator who demands his players to block and his teams to run the ball.

I can roll with that. Now when you say get an OC... are you suggesting that we still keep Garrett at HC? Because I believe if we get a new HC---like Payton, we'll get a new OC.

I figured that they couldn't do it this week because of the Tyron injury, but that perhaps it could happen next week, or at least as soon as Free has another shit performance.

But someone asked Broaddus that on twitter and he said that the team wouldn't replace Free.

??????

Harbaugh will replace the QB of a 7-2 team and last years NFC Title game participant with an unproven 2nd year guy... but we can't replace a RT who is playing as bad as Rob Pettiti ever did?

I wouldn't trust what Broaddus has to say.
