Question: It is still early but I like how the Cowboys have approached things this off season. No more rash decisions. Love the Cole Beasley signing. I love the new way of thinking in Valley Ranch. If Murray doesn’t re-sign. No worries we can find another back. This is why you pay your scouts. They found Murray they can go find another RB.

Bob Sturm: There is no question the Cowboys have gone from being a team that frightened its own fanbase to a franchise that seems to be gaining the public trust quite rapidly. Shows what a few good moves can do to the consensus feelings. I think they have earned the credit. if you look at the last few years of moves, the Morris Claiborne move sticks out as a big miss (so far). Otherwise, they have conducted some pretty solid business overall for a few seasons in a row.

Question: There is a player from last year’s draft; DE Ben Gardner from Stanford. I believe he can add something to the mix. Thoughts?

Bob Sturm: Stanford’s Gardner absolutely will get a good look this year. He went out at camp last year and missed the year, but now with his redshirt under his belt, they should get a rotational guy with him. I know they liked him quite a bit on draft weekend.

Question: Say oakland offers dez 5@110 do you match or take the picks? I would take the picks

Bob Sturm: Oakland picks 4th. I would take the picks and laugh and laugh. Hint: Oakland isn’t even thinking about that right now. There is no way they would do that. Right? But, they are Oakland. I highly doubt it.

Question: I hear a lot of love for Murray and I have some as well, but I believe we could find another back capable of his abilities that understands how to properly carry a football. I say bring on Peterson. That dude has something to prove and would be hungry. What do you believe would work best? Does Murray mean that much?

Bob Sturm: I give Murray every opportunity to return at the right money. For me, that is 4 for $22m or $24m at the very top (say, $15m guaranteed). If not, I look elsewhere, but no way Peterson takes less than that. So, then, what is the point? I am not worried about Murray’s fumbles. He runs hard and guys try to rip the ball out. He isn’t careless. And he isn’t a chronic fumbler outside of 2014. It is the collateral damage of what he does like the occasional Romo INT. They happen.

Question: Towards the end of last season we finally got to see Garret coaching aggressively in spots; onside kicks, going for it on 4th, etc. Do you think it was a confidence thing that we hadn’t seen it before? And do you see it continuing into next season? I’ve always been a big supporter of Big Red but he does tend towards conservative calls

Bob Sturm: I think it is possible he is growing into his skin a bit. That means that he is learning when to gamble and when to be aggressive. I will tell you this: it is much easier to roll the dice on your team when you are convinced you have the better team on the field. And, last year was the first time he consistently had the better team on a regular basis. I am sure it is no coincidence that he also was more aggressive with this better side.

I wonder about Gardner too. He played an odd inside role in college for someone with such extreme athletic ability. Put him on the end and pin the ears.

Can he ever learn to manage the clock in critical situations?

Question: The Cowboys have to improve their defense. They must walk away with at least three starters. We are two pass rushers away from being Superbowl contenders.

Bob Sturm: Since there is no question here, I will simply say that I believe I agree they need 3 defensive starters. Pass rushers might not need two, but likely one for sure.

Question: So do the Cowboys wait and see what Demaryius Thomas gets signed for, or get Dez done first?

Bob Sturm: Both sides have waited for the other guy to go first for a year now. Thomas is waiting for Bryant to set the market – Bryant is waiting for Thomas to set the market. Thomas went at pick #22 in 2010, Bryant at pick #24 and the two have been tied at the hip since – including both being franchised on Monday by their teams.

I really thought when Denver took Demaryius before Dez, they were making an epic mistake. Thought that kid would be a bust. He's been damned good though.
